hey guys,
have you heard anything else from the school besides your deposit confirmation letter???
also, when do we get our loans finalized? are all of the next deposits ($1000?) and rent for apartments (starting august)supposed to be covered by ourselves? just want to prepare myself...

ana,

it's gets to be a waiting game on getting all the info you need to plan your next year. as long as you have your FAFSA filed on time and get your PCOM loan application filed on time as well, they'll pretty much take care of everything else as long as there are no problems with anything. as far as spotting the apartment security deposit and first months rent, that will probably be up to you if things turn out as they did for most of the 2005 class. for me personally, i didn't get my refund check until after i had to pay rent etc., so it had to come out of pocket. save and bit and plan for this, as it may be the case this year as well.
overall, they'll let you know what they need from you and what you need to do. a heads up for the entire class of 2006...start on you immunizations, etc now! they're a bitch to do at the last minute. call to get the specifics, etc.
hope this helps a bit...back to the books. damn finals are a killer.

What are some of the common apartment complexes that PCOM students live in? I took a look at Lincoln Green apartments yesterday. They were expensive (but a lot cheaper and bigger than my apartment in Manhattan), they also allow dogs (which is a necessity for me). What do others think about this place? Is there a better place to look at?

Also when does the school start to send stuff out to the new students (fin. aid, housing, orientation information....ect.)?

Class of 2006

Melissa-

PCOM students live in just about every apt complex within 5 or so miles of PCOM (Greenbriar, Lincoln Green, Presidential, Duffield House, Imperial Towers, Bala, Carlene, etc). Lincoln Green is very expensive compared to other places you will find, and many places allow dogs (for a little more money, of course). If I were you, I would hold out. School doesn't send out info until about April. There will also be many private landlords with places and students looking to fill up their places. I will be looking for a new place and don't plan on starting my search for a while (my place is too much $$ for me).

If you have more questions, send me an email/private message...

Michelle

Any other PCOM 2006ers out there?

I live in Deptford, NJ, which is right across the river from Philly. I'm going to commute (the Schuylkill will suck, but I will save a bundle by living at home). So, if there are others out there planning on commuting from S. Jersey let me know. Maybe we can organize a car-pool.
Also, just sent in my PCOM finaid stuff this past Thursday. If you're still waiting on that stuff, it's coming soon.

Hey guys I need some help, oh JPHazelton you don't need to reply, I know were you stand.

I have been accepted to NYCOM NOVA PCOM LECOM maybe CCOM and some allopathic schools. I having a tough deciding. I have heard about PCOMs great reputation and clinical affilations. I need to know from PCOM students what they thought of the rotations and their ability to get residencies. Did the reputation of PCOM give them an advantage of all other schools. Or is it your board scores and your grades that determine your ability to get a residency. I really like CCOM and NOVA and PCOM. Which is the better school. I think all the schools have a great cirriculum. I have heard CCOM and NOVA's OMM might be a little better than PCOM. Does anybody have the stats on board scores or residency match rate at PCOM, CCOM, and NOVA.

Have a great day

I alsowanted to here from future ARMY D.Os Both Army and AIr Force. Which is better. I know PCOM has a large population of ARMY doctors. I have heard some of the bad things and good things. I just wanted a couple more perspectives on the subject

Have a great day

DAVE
What a great, great review of the school!!! You answered all of my questions and more!!! I'm excited to hear that there are lots of cool people at the school b/c I'm really social, and like having fun to break up the monotony of studying. Also, your breakup of the curriculum was fabulous. It really helps to know those little details that are actually so important in your every-day life once you start school. Muchas gracias!

...hey man, no problem. I know how many questions I had this time last year...I wish you luck and look forward to seeing/drinking with all y'all in the fall!

Hello my fellow classmates..

Did you guys all get an invite to the financial aid seminar? Who's going? I recently filled out my FAFSA and man, there is no way my EFC will be that high...
Look forward to seeing you all there...

I will be there on April 5th.

I'm just looking over financial aid stuff now and BOY am I confused!

My parents have been taking care of all this while I am in college, but now I'm going to be doing it.

I hope the things they go over in the FA seminar is like "Financial Aid for Dummies"!

Does PCOM have a summer term for 1st year students? The school web-site makes it seem you're done at the end of June and start back up in August. (5 or 6 week summer break) However, I seem to remember someone at the interview saying PCOM goes year-round. Thanks for the help.

PCOM does not go year round (until adter your second year of course).

This year I believe first year classes are slated to end on May 24th, with the week after that for exams (probably won't take the whole week).

You get the whole first summer off, with school starting mid-August or so. this year I believe that school starts a little early so you can get a fuull two weeks off for Xmas.

Hey all! Just wanted to say hi again to all my future classmates. I have started to receive all the mailings from the school, and the only things I seem to be really nervous about are financial aid and housing.
I am unable to attend the financial aid seminar thing on April 5th, so I hope all you SDNers will fill me in!
Also, I will be sending in my roomate profile thingy cause the more I look around for places to live, the more I think my wallet would appreciate the help of a roomate!
So, anyway, I hope to see more posts from future PCOMers. I thought there would be a lot more posts since we have a very large class size. Don't be shy. I hope to learn a little more about everyone before school starts. Feel free to email me if anyone just wants to talk. [email protected]

Hey Smokey223:

Just a note to you and all of the others flipping out about financial aid... I was in your shoes last year trying to understand all of the B.S. First of all, if this year's finaid seminar is like last year's, it's lame. Your best bet is to make an appt with a finaid advisor at school or, if you're far away, call one and chat. Basically, they will tell you to try to take out the least possible amount. I did the opposite and took out as much as possible my first year and am going to cut back for my future years (as I have now figured out how to budget my money and I know what I need). So, my words of advice are - don't sweat it. You'll get the money you need.
Second, for those of you worried about housing. There's a ton of housing always available somewhere in the area. Most places don't know what they will have available until 60 days before whatever your move-in date is. Big complexes will know a little sooner than that. So, once again, don't sweat it. You'll find a place to live.

If you have questions about housing or finaid, ask the current students (me, Bobo, Slindsay, David511, mlunn, etc). We'll help you out all we can :)

Michelle

Hey PCOM 2006- lets get this party started! 4 months and we'll be getting ready to hunker down in the anatomy lab for 3 months! I'm having trouble focusing on school knowing that Philadelphia is just around the corner... :)

Hey PCOMers...Is anyone going to the seminar on friday? I will be there. I'm so excited for school to start. What is everyone doing for the summer? Is anyone moving to Philly early? I'm actually moving there next week. I can't wait to meet everyone!

Melissa
PCOM class of 2006!

hey this is johnny from brooklyn and i am down for this friday. i am stoked about meeting all our new classmates, should be interesting. hope to see many of you on friday!

I won't be making the Financial aid seminar. It's a little too far for me. You'll have to inform me of what goes on...I'm planning on working for part of the summer, then going to COT Training for the Air Force. ANy other USAF HPSP PCOMers going to Alabama in June?

I will be there on Friday.

I'm working most of the summer back home in CT eventhough I have my apartment in Philly.

That's about it I guess.

Hope everyone enjoys the week and I will see you on Friday.

Josh <------ my real name :D

Hi everyone, I'm New to this whole thing, however I will be attending PCOM as a member of the class of 2006 and I am looking forward to meeting my fellow classmates.
p.s.Is this financial aid seminar formal?

Francisco

Good question phichi42. We're not supposed to dress up for this thing, are we?

Hey BB, are you nervous about COT. I heard USAF isn't bad, and that your in a airconditioned classroom most of the time taking notes. I almost did the USAF HPSP. But I want to think about it for a year.

Beach Babe
I don't think COT for USAF is too tough (from what I've heard) but it will push you. It's mostly leadership training and like you said AC rooms all day long. There is a physical fitness test that has to be passed and one weekend is spent out in the 'wild' learning wilderness survival. I'm pretty excited about it all. I think the HPSP is a great deal!
Of course, I may be just a naive 1st yr who's about to get a serious wake-up call!

hey guys,
i am a prospective PCOM-er...i had my interview this past thursday, april 4th...and well i am extremely nervous to find out how i did.
i was wondering if anyone out here had any idea if the class of 2006 is pretty much filled and also, do you know how the waitlisting works, and if it is ranked...and so on.
i really love this school, as i am sure everyone on this list does and i would like to know what my chances are...
thanks!

Final class decision is to be made the week of April 8th.

I'm not sure how the wait list works.

Good luck with everything.

Hope to see you at PCOM in August!

JPH

I didn't attend the Financial Aid Seminar. Can anyone tell me if I missed anything?

BB

They talked about the process for getting loans.

All the same information contained in the letter that you probably got in the mail.

They had a brief discussion about the health insurance offered to PCOM students.

Then they had military representatives talk about the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

If you have any questions, PCOM asks that you contact someone in the FA department and they would be happy to talk to you.

Same gracious attitude that I have always met at PCOM, but basically a lot of information that I already knew.

I met a few Class of 2006ers. Looks like a good class from what I can see, although most weren't there.

See you in August.

JPH

Does PCOM have a student website for its students? I've heard other schools like NOVA and KCOM have sites and others are developing one?

Hey guys! Just curious if anyone out there is interested in the Introduction to Medical Biochemistry/Molecular Biology class they are offering this summer. I am considering it because I have been out of school since last May, and consider myself to be a tad rusty. I guess the only thing stopping me is if I can find a place to live in Philly by then. Has anyone gone and checked out the housing book in the office?
Anyway, I have also become very curious as to what all my future classmates are like. :) I didn't get a chance to go to the financial aid seminar, so I missed an opportunity then. So, I will start off by introducing myself (feel free to take my lead)...My name is Julianne. I'm 22 y/o, I am from upstate NY, and my SDN name is Smokey because I have a cat named Smokey. Hmm, I have no idea what else to write. I guess I just wanted to know how old everyone is, whether or not the are coming straight out of undergrad, or they have been working, etc. Alright, that's it for now! :D Take care everyone!

-Julianne

Julianne

PCOM has recently mailed something concerning housing. You should be able to find enough information in that mailing.

I will not be in Philly for the summer, but I look forward to meeting you in August.

PCOM Class of 2006

:) JPH-
I did get the mailing for the housingalready. I was just curious as to how many people actually post for roomates. I am almost 100% that I want a roomate to save on the expenses.

See you in August! :D

-Julianne

Hello Julianne,
I just received the letter about the medical biochemisty 2 week course. Sounds good. Have you found out anything else about it? I have also been out of school a while. 7 Years to be exact. Alas, I am just shy of 30, old and gray! Anyhow I am looking forward to meeting you and everyone else this August.

Francisco

Anyone hear anything about Orientation yet?

It is planned for the week of August 5th, but I know there was some question as to whether it starts on August 5th (Monday) or August 7th (Wednesday).

Thanks!

Ok, I am going to try to answer a bunch of your different questions..

BB- yes, PCOM has a student website. It's called Blackboard and you only have access once you're a student. They give you all of your passwords during orientation. The website has all of our course info, online quizzes (woohoo!), and other useful info.

People wondering about housing - lots of people list in the books in Student Affairs, although I was flipping through it the other day and there wasn't that much in it yet. I am looking for a place right now (a 1 BR) and am only finding 2-BR apts, so I may be looking for a roommate, if any females are interested in talking about that. Your best bet is to come down here and drive around for a place. I remember that during my orientation, there were several people that didn't have apts yet and found classmates still looking for roommates, so there is a place for you here :)

JP - I think my orientation was only a Thursday and Friday, but maybe they are changing it for you. Call the Student Affairs office to find out the official dates.

ok, hope that helps some of you... oh, if anyone wants my thoughts on the summer course, send me a message...

Michelle

IMHO, I would strongly recommend against taking the summer biochem class. If you ask me, it is just a way for the school to pull in some extra cash. The people I know who went did not take it that seriously, stopped going to classes by the ned, and barely studied for the exams. They did a have better knowledge base than others when the material rolled around second trimester. Did they do better as whole than people who didn't take the class? Don't know. maybe they didn't feel the need to study it as much.

In my case, I had been out of school some years, never had biochem or immuno or any of that stuff. I didn't take the summer class and I did just fine in IBMS, a few notches above the class average - and I am no rocket scientist. Maybe I felt a little more pressure to study, who knows? By the way, when I took IBMS last year, ~25% of the total class grade was a freebie - a silly little paper, attendance at case conferences, etc. So in effect there is a built in buffer for the course. Of course, 10 or so people managed to flunk it last year.

The summer class will give you a chance to meet some of your future classmates so you will know people when school starts if you are uptight about that. But I say save your money and enjoy your summer. There's plenty of time for pesky old IBMS when school rolls around and if you study a moderate amount you'll pass and do fine!

I was just told that PCOM's financial aid application was due April 15th.

I know the deadline for filing the FAFSA is April 15th, but I didn't see anywhere about a deadline for their application.

Anyone know any different?

I doubt that the financial aid stuff is 'due' on April 15th. I'm thinking that all the people who get accepted during the summer from the waitlist will need financial aid as well. The sooner you get it in though, the sooner you find out how much you'll get. But to be sure, I'd call or email the Fin. Aid office. They've been very quick to respond to all of my off the wall 1st year questions!

Oh, one last thing- I haven't seen anything either that said Fin. Aid was due Apr. 15th. It may just be a mix up with the FAFSA due date (at least I hope so).

Hey guys,
I have a question for those of you that are out of state residents...are you going to change to PA residents? I know that some of the scholarships/grants that PCOM offers are only for PA residents, so I don't know if I should change. What are your opinions?
Thanks.
Ana

How do you "change" to PA residency?

I was under the impression that you needed to live in PA for more than 12 months as a non-student. So...I've been in college in PA for 4 years, but I am not a resident because I am here as a full time student.

If anyone has more information on this, please advise.

Hey all -

for anyone women looking for an apt... I just found a nice 2bed for wicked cheap and am starting to look for a roommate. The place is about a mile from school. If you're interested, email me at [email protected] (write PCOM apt in the subject so I don't accidently delete it). I will tell you all of the details, etc.

Toodles!
Michelle

hey everyone, i just wanted to ask a question about our lifestyles when we start school this fall.....i always have been wondering about dating within our class....does anyone else worry about this...i mean its wierd cause if you go out with someone and it turns sour, then it sucks that you have to spend so much time with someone you might hate...people tell me too that you shouldnt date within the class but come on, how is that possible, especially when there is 250 of us? i dont know about you guys but im sure within a week, i ll like someone, thats just me,,,haha,,,,,i would love to hear from you guys and how you might be approaching this topic....take care...

 Ok, I probably shouldn't write this, since I know that my classmates know my screenname on here, but whatever.

So, here's the deal. LOTS OF PEOPLE DATE WITHIN THE CLASS... sometimes things go sour and sometimes people end up getting married... lots of people cheat on their significant others that are far far away (stress relief from school?) ... lots of people stay completely faithful to their significant others far far away .... and lots of people only date outside of class...

So, you can see, it's just like life "on the outside". My advice, (yes, from personal experience), since you see the person so darn much it's incredibly important to BE HONEST about everything b/c when things take a turn, it can wreak havoc on your studying (especially while studying for your anatomy final). But, if you're honest you can maintain the professional relationhship that you should have with all of your classmates (b/c there will probably be other classmates that aren't your faves, too, but you have to be equally professional with them)...

Dating within the class can be pretty cool b/c no one understands what you are going thru better than a classmate and heck, you always have a study buddy... just remember, as with anything in life, it's what YOU make of it...

Ok, good luck no matter what happens...

PhillyGirl

Does anyone know who we need to forward our final college transcripts to?

A friend of mine told me that we needed to have the registrar send an official copy of our final transcript to PCOM, but I'm not sure who to send it to.

Thanks.
