Pcom Class Of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
congrats raptor5

glad the students didn't scare you away 😉

Now you have 11 months of STRESS-FREE living (while you figure out how to sell your first-born and your soul to pay the tuition)

And remember, one year from now, you will be the one looking into the fish bowl and go "why does everyone always wear a black-color suit? can't they be colorful?"

Applied to 1 school, accepted to one school. It definitely is the cheaper way to go. Good luck to everyone else.

That's confidence 😱

Wow, congrats, raptor5! I didn't know schools send out acceptance letters so early! When did you interview at PCOM and when did they inform you of your acceptance?

Also, any suggestions for the rest of us applying to PCOM .. in terms of interviews/interview questions? what are your stats? thanks!!

1. I applied through AACOMAS in the end of June to PCOM only.
2. I received a secondary from PCOM on July 1st.
3. I sat on the secondary for a month.
4. I sent out secondary on August 1st I believe.
5. I got a postcard from PCOM about a week later telling me they recieved my secondary and my application was complete.
6. I received an interview invite for Sept. 15 about 3 days later.
7. Interviewed on Monday Sept. 15
8. Received acceptance letter on Friday Sept. 19
9. Sent out $250.00 tuition prepaymenton Monday Sept. 22

My stats:
GPA 3.20
MCAT 22L

I am 27 years old. I have worked for Lucent Technologies/Agere Systems and a major power company. I did a few years in the U.S. Navy. Been to over a dozen countries and 40 of the 50 states. Did an internship at a hospital and ended getting 3 D.O. LOR's. 2 are adjuncts with PCOM. I had 2 offers from other D.O.'s but just said no thank you because 5 is kinda overkill.

The interview was a breeze. I was asked about managed care, what my hardest class has been, if I could change one thing about myself what would it be, do I consider my past experiences an asset, how many schools did you apply to? I had no prior knowledge of the questions so I answered quickly and honestly and expressed my opinions. My interview lasted 15 minutes. When it was over I left and went to the King of Prussia Mall and returned at 12:30 for the tour.

When you walk into the interview you are a salesman selling your application. If you feel for any reason it is incomplete tell them more. Sell yourself. Make eye contact, look prefessional, and most of all smile. Be energetic and hopefully full of charisma. You want them to like you, to relate to you or envy you. People need to know your eager and excited. Know when to shut up.

See, I knew where I wanted to go to school. So I made every effort to have to only apply to one school. I did not want have to take the MCAT's over that's for sure. Hope this helps. It worked for me.

Wow, R5. Congrats. I applied to PCOM as well. I have a lower GPA and a higher MCAT. Your Giving me some hope that someone with my stats can get in. What is the school like? Was it as nice as portrayed on the net and their brochure?

Congrats Raptor5!!

I just got my acceptance letter yesterday!! I guess I'll see you next year.

Congratulations Patch and Raptor! So PCOM for both of you eh? That's awesome =).

Congrats to you and all the PCOM class of 2008

I just wanted to congratulate you!! I hope to be in your acceptance shoes soon :hardy:

I'm applying for the class of 09 and would like to find out last year's admissions statistics. Can anyone tell me where to find them? I have checked the website and the CD-Rom they sent, but it only lists 2000 statistics.

Thanks raptor. Where did you find that? Because I was also looking for mean GPA and MCAT scores as well and I'd like to look it up so I know what to gun for.

Congratulations Raptor and Patch. Good luck to you both.

Hey guys congratulations on the acceptance. Here's a few words of advice from the class of 2007 (more like my advice 😉 ).

Don't do anything studious this summer and ...

This is in regards to radiology... (which you will get as a 1st year and several additional times after that.)

Find a song that you like, memorize the first verse, and get ready to rock the mic. (no joke). Don't be surprized whenyour mugshot shows up on the overhead screen (all 10+ ft of it) admist some nice scans of uterine fibroids. I'm sure your classmates will be anxious to hear what you have chosen to perform. We'll be interested too... some of the 2nd and 3rd year students will sit in on your radiology lectures. It's a riot!

Later!

Hey Pitt,

I have a couple of questions about PCOM that maybe you or someone else could answer. I've read something (on sdn) about a summer biochemistry course two weeks long before classes start kind of to get you in the routine for med school and meet some people before classes actually start. I was just wondering if it cost anything, if you know how many students usually take it, and when you would get information on it. I took this year off from classes and just workin full time so I think it might be a good idea for me. Also I was just wondering if most students live in apartment complexes along city ave, I'm from the area so I know theres a bunch of surrounding areas you can live at but personally I would like to deal with as little traffic as possible. One last question (I probably should have asked more durring my interview) do they list incomming students that are lookin for a roomate or roomates?

Thanks

Here's a quick reply... (I'm between lectures right now)

The summer biochem program is pretty good in the sense that you will have seen the material (in the summer) prior to lecture in the D.O. program. It's also a pretty good way to meet some of your fellow classmates prior to the start of the year!

In all honesty (my personal opinion)... I don't think that the material is that tough.... it's not the difficulty of the material, it's the volume of material that's difficult, believe me. I think it's more for those who don't have a science background. I would contact the admissions office to get more information about it before making up your mind though! I think something like 15 DO students took this course prior to the start of the year... Our class size is 263. Take that for what it's worth.

In terms of apartments... There are several apartment complexes along Conshohocken Ave... just behind the school. For the most part the prices are around $600-700/month... For a studio and including utilities. I would HIGHLY recommend living there in order to get to class on time... traffic around here is a nightmare.
(the 5th lgst city in the U.S. with the only major way in is via 2, 2 lane highways?!)

With regards to roomates... get in contact with the student affairs office. They'll help you out.

take care, good luck, and congrats.

Hello,
I have another practical PCOM question. Could one do ok without a car at PCOM? Are there appts close enough to walk to classes everyday (and night?). Or would it not be smart so sell my car (i just do not want to carry it all the way from CA..)

Thank you much!

Yes, there are plenty of apartments within walking range to PCOM.

Since PCOM is on City Ave, you are not restricted to choosing to live in Philadelphia. You may choose an apartment west of City Ave, in Bala Cynwd.

You will get a big packet from Student Affairs in the spring/summer. It will list the apartments that students commonly choose to live, along w/ the price range, what's included (utilities), and walking/driving time. It also gives you advice on how to set up utilities like gas, cable, water, electric, etc.

There will also be a form that you can fill out if you are looking for a roommate. And if you are interested in finding a roommate, call Student Affairs and they have a list of people who have filled out that forms, looking for roommates.

Hope I've been helpful.

Hey group_theory-

I just sent you a pm....🙂

For everyone else who will be joining me next summer, congratulations!! I can't wait to meet you all.

Hello Guys,
I'm attending PCOM this fall and I'm also going to attend the summer biochemistry program. I wanted to know does anyone have any comments on Duffield Apartments. I like the fact that it is all bills included and it is in walking distance to the school, being that I'm leaving my car here in Texas. I am also curious to how brutal the winters are in philly and what is the closet supermarket to PCOM and the City Avenue area. Congrats to everyone accepted and I look forward to meeting you guys. Oh yeah, one more question. I'm currently in the process of looking for scholarships etc. and I wanted to know if PCOM gives alot of scholarships.
Thanks,
Keith

Pcom is a private school. However they are accepting most of in-state applicants, over 50%? Why is this? I am in second year of PCOM class and ranked top 1/5 of class. I get rather surprised at seeing very low MCAT scores and GPA scores and probably these scores are low due to lowering the standard of in-state applicants?! Although MCAT scores and GPA's aren't important, but I think DO schools need to at least raise the standard a little to attract top college graduates. As an outstate applicant my GPA was 3.8 and MCAT was 28. The range of accepted applicants' score is quite large as you can see. Prepare to so some serious studying here.

I don't go to PCOM, but I am familiar with the area and awaiting response from them (hopefully good news). Anywho, there is a pathmark right near there. As far as weather..well I would not be caught dead in TODAY's weather walking no where lol. So it depends on the 'luck' of the season. There were days this late fall that was warmer than the typically warm climates of the south...and then there are days like today where I don't even want to walk out and get the mail. lol (We just had a snow storm come in last night and will last through saturday evening.)

PCOM was a great experience when I interviewed there and boy was I surprised to find out (and see) the computerized/robotic million dollar patient that was featured on ER. They call it Stan the MAN..but of course Stan can be converted to a woMAN also. PCOM is the ONLY medical school in PA that has this..even with the oh so highly ranked UPENN in the state. I say at least I'd know where the higher tuition of private school is going.... so much for DO schools being subpar in education and facilities. 🙄

Congrats to those already heading to PCOM

Sending in my check to reserve a seat in the class of 2008 today!!!

I'm happy to have some time to relax before school starts but I can't wait to meet everyone. Anyone else from CT?

Good luck to all those accepted and everyone having a tough time deciding between schools.

-Jay

Good luck to all those making plans to attend PCOM. It is outstanding in every way from academics, socially, administration, etc, etc, etc. It will exceed all of your expectations. All of the hype is right on target. Welcome !!!

Hi all, I'm happy to join this thread. I've recently been accepted to PCOM and I'm delighted to read all the positive comments about the school. Although I'm still waiting to hear from other schools, PCOM is at the top of my list and I look forward to making the final decision! I'm new to the forum but I'll be sure to participate in these discussions.

Will

Just sent in my check this morning to reserve a spot for class of 2008. It was a tough decision between PCOM, NSU, and CCOM. PCOM prevailed based on alot of factors. Can't wait to meet everyone in August.

Finally!!!

Got the acceptance letter today. I can't wait to get started and to meet my fellow classmates. I guess its my turn to say, for all those people still trying to get into school, keep at it, the effort will be worth while.
Any other west coast people going to PCOM in 2004?

Hey indymed,

What day did you interview. I hope I get something today in the mail. I can't wait to get home from work!

I interviewed on December 10th. I believe the committee met and sent out letters on the 23rd. Depending on where you live it may take some time. But I live in Seattle so who knows. GOOD luck.

Most private schools allopathic and osteopathic favor in-state residents in the application process. This is b/c states often subsidize the tuition of those from say PA in the case of PCOM. With tighter state funding some of this preference is changing, for example at Medical College of Wisconsin, the gov't of Wisconsin use to chip in $10000 for each Wisconsin resident-- now it's only $5000. Subsequently, the percentage of in-staters that seats are reserved for has decreased b/c of less financial incentive for the school to favor Badgers.

Still Wisconsin residents are favored, just as in-state residents are favored at most other private schools. Of course, the discrepancy is not as great as that of public schools, but something to keep in mind when choosing which school to apply. CCOM and PCOM are the two that come to mind that push their state residents. The school is getting something from the state, if not, those students w/ higher GPAs and MCATs from CA and elsewhere would get in before PA (and maybe NJ) residents.

I just found out this weekend that I got into PCOM! I'm totally stoked. I'm a re-applicant, but the wait was worth it. I'll be taking the Summer Start class so I'll be in Phillydilly sometime in June. Congrats to all and see you in the Fall 🙂

-Philip

was information sent out about the summer start class? i never got any information about it and i don't remember hearing about it at my interview. might have to contact them but please let me know about it.

thanks,

-J

It was a bullet in my acceptance letter stating:
"Beginning in June, and continuing for five weeks, we are offering a preparatory ptogram "Summerstart" which you are required to attend..." Its a medical biochem course that isn't credited towards my degree but there are exams. There's no charge, but for me, the program is mandatory. I think it's because I'm a non-traditional student. I've been out of school since 2000 and I actually asked about the program during my interview. I mentioned how I would benefit from the program and that I was highly interested in attending. I need to get my rusty mind back in the study mode.
You should call the admissions office about the program.
-P

Is there a difference between the summer start and the summer biochem class? I was also never told about any of this, this is the first I've heard. I checked out the PCOM calender online and there is a biochem class for three weeks in July. Is that Summer Start? How many people usually do the summer class?

I dunno? like I mentioned before... I've been out of college for three years and this program is not for everyone. If you want more info contact the school. I'm not even sure if it's the same class you saw on the PCOM site. This class starts in June and it's 5 weeks long. Sorry, I don't have much info myself.

That summer class sounds like a real load of cr@p to me. I would spend your last summer before med school studying the bottom of a margarita pitcher. I was out of school well longer than 3 years, and never had biochem. I scored well above the class average. When I took biochem it was pretty hard to flunk (though a few managed). Something like 25% of your grade was a "gimme" - ie bs small group sessions, participation, a paper, etc. I find it hard to believe there is a 5 week program. What a nightmare! Enjoy your time off! I know people who took the summer class, they didn't take it real serious while they were in it and they weren't that motivated to study during the real thing. I think it is most useful for meeting your future classmates, but there is plenty of time for that in the fall.

bobo, pcom msiv

except, i don't like margarita's, but i will be at the bottom of other types of pitchers, nonetheless

just sent my $$ in, i'm now officially in the PCOM class of 2008! i'm pumped, still working on where i want to live. not sure if i want to live in the city or in the suburbs and drive. i know the commute sucks, but having the ability to go for a walk at 9:00 PM with my soon to be wife, i don't want to have to be looking over my shoulder every 10 mins. i know it's not that bad, i grew up outside of philly. but being in a quite neighborhood goes a loooong way. what is this computerized "Stan the Man." we weren't shown that on the tour, but i've read about it briefly, sounds awesome. does PCOM have the "Harvey, cardiac simulator" like some of the other schools? as for the summer school, i didn't have anything like that on my acceptance letter, but i am taking biochem for my own good this upcoming semester. and since they knew that from my app, maybe that's why (i graduated undergrad in 2001 also). by the way, sandiegodo, i hope you're not a chargers fan!!! fly, eagles fly!

I agree! Go Eagles! Especially now that the Seahawks have gone down in flames.

I will be taking the summer Biochem class as well at PCOM although it is not required. I am not sure if there is a difference b/t the summer start program and the few week program I am thinking about. I would imagine not. Billy33 I know what you mean about a nice quiet area. I live about 20-25 minutes from PCOM. It is actually just north of King of Prussia (Royersford). An expanding suburban area and I plan to make decent chunk of change when I sell my condo after I graduate and move on to residency. The only thing that sucks is that I have to time my small commute just right to avoid traffic. Plan to arrive at PCOM by 7:30 and leave around 6:00. Rt. 76 blows. The infrastructure of Phlly is the worst. Definitely not like SD.
