PCOM Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I found out that my DO didn't write me a LOR because of a misunderstanding. I am complete aside from that letter. I know that I don't have the greatest MCAT but will I be considered without that LOR?

Yes. You will be considered for possible interview because I don't have an LOR from a D.O. prior to interview. If you don't have an LOR from DO, it is recommended that you have at least one strong LOR from a professor (one who knows you well). During the intervierw, I never mentioned about the fact that I don't have an LOR from a D.O. They never asked me either. However, during the end of the intervierw, I decided to bring up the fact that I was shadowing a D.O. and asked if they would like to receive a copy of an LOR from the D.O., then they said that would be great if I can forward it immediately before the committee meets. So, LOR from DO is not required but recommended.

oops yes, this is correct. I was thinking of another school! I didn't even send PCOM a D.O. letter

The days of PCOM's rule of SDN are dead.

JPH is gone. Medhacker isn't around (probably drove to grocery store and froze).

NSU represent!

how long does it take P.C.O.M to acknowledge receipt of our deposite? I sent mine in last Saturday but the check hasn't even been cashed....shld I worry?

For those that went, how was the luncheon today?

The luncheon was a great meet and greet with the other students. Lunch was good. I wish I knew what kind of salad dressing they used 😉. Faculty and adcom members sat with us, too. Dr. Balin spoke about research.

Any hot girls?

JPH is going to pass the torch to me, but I first need to take his 6 month residency program in "research and rhetoric that'd make yo' Daddy cry."

To this day I don't know why they banned him. I'm sure there's a politically correct reason.

still trying to decide whether or not to take the leap and go to PCOM..y don't I just not think about it and send in the damn deposit? ahh!😱

DrMaz, when is your interview? Mine is Jan. 26.

Mine's Jan 28th. It's gonna suck b/c then I'll have to drive down Tuesday night and come back up to school on Wednesday afterwards, so I don't miss too many classes. I'd prefer to have the interview either on Monday or Friday, but I'm just happy to have one. Goodluck to you.

So I'm starting to get worried about my application. I submitted through AACOMAS on Oct. 26 and haven't heard anything.

I called AACOMAS and they said there was a problem with my transcripts. Fixed that on Nov. 11. Application was completed. Called again, they said they were "processing" it.

PCOM still doesn't have it.

Any tips? Specific contacts at PCOM who might be able to figure this out?

So if they released there interview invites on Friday, is that all they are inviting this time or do they post invites on multiple days

I received an interview invite for February 5th today!!!!!!! I just hope it's not too late. :xf:

i just got an invite for feb 9th...
i dont even know if i should bother going
whats tuition like at pcom?

edit: checked on the site 38K approx.
its 6K less than CCOM would be for me, so i guess i'll interview and check the place out

i'm a cold weather person, what do you mean i'll get a bit more out of pcom?
is it that much better than ccom?

If you listen to SDN, yes. You're gonna have to relocate anyway, right? Why not relocate and save a bit of money? The opportunities are endless at PCOM, so to speak. Interview to atleast see the school. Although, don't expect a huge banner saying, COME HERE! The interview is low key. They give you info, but they don't make you sit through one of those, "This is why we're the best, come here" presentation, they don't win you over with gifts, the day is so low key its beautiful.

i was looking at some of the joint degrees offered by pcom (mba, phd)
i'll check it out because i am interested in that
specifically the do/mba program

I can't believe that they're sending interview invites two months out. Feb already? Really?

They interview through March, right? So I need to get an invite soon if I'm going to get one....:scared:

(I have the feeling they haven't even looked at my app once. Sigh)

So, I was supposedly complete back in AUGUST and called today to see what was up. I was told by one lady, very kindly, that something was weird with my application and to call back and ask for someone else. I called back and simply got a "You're complete? There is NOTHING more I can do. You will be notified by mail when they make a decision"

Anyone else in this weird limbo? I've been complete since frickin' August. I'd just like to know. I'm not mad at the attitude because I'd probably be the same way if premeds bugged me all day, but still. It would've been nice to at least humor me and check to make sure stuff was in order instead of acting like I was an a-hole for wondering.

You think PCOM = CCOM on an academic/future opportunties level? I kind of had the impression that they were equal, but only well known in their respective areas. So going to PCOM can help you get a decent residency in PA/East coast, and CCOM can help you get a decent residency in IL/midwest.

The physician that interviewed me at VCOM told me this about CCOM (cue anecdote): "I wish CCOM was more like VCOM." I thought that was great. I didn't prod for info, though.

Philadelphia is not a horrible city. I've invested 4 years in this city and will be investing 4 more. I will admit though, I am glad to be getting out of west Philly and moving up to the PCOM/St. Joe's area.

Last year, pcom graduates matched their first choice residency 75%, and it has been decreasing every year since 2000. Anyone ask about this?

I just got a PCOM interview invite for February. That gives me some time to think about options. I'm still keeping my CCOM interview... It will give me a chance to check out Chicago more since I'm also thinking UIC. However, my GFs family is in Philly, so it will be a difficult choice.

Looks like today is a big interview invite day. I just got one from PCOM (finally since I sent my secondary in late september) for February 12!! I am excited but I really wish it was earlier, because I will probably have to send a deposit for either kcumb (which I just got back from and loved) or western (which I have next week) before I even make it to philly. Both are 1,000 dollars. I will definitely go to the PCOM interview because I don't live too far away, but going there would mean eating my deposit. 🙁

If anyone still has a december (or january) interview date and is canceling, let us know! Good luck to everyone!

Got an interview invite as well! I am sooooooooo happy! I was complete since 9/30 and just assumed I would never hear from them. I'm kind of worried that interviewing in February is too late, but I guess all I can do is stay positive right now! PCOM is one of my absolute top choicesssss! Congrats to everyone who received one as well 🙂

I'm STILL waiting for my "you're complete" letter.

I submitted my secondary in Sept, and they had no issues with cashing my check. Yet they act like I'm the biggest pain in the neck, ever, when I call and check on things (we're talking <5 phone calls total here, it's not like I call every day). And every time I call I get told something different regarding whether or not certain things are in my file.

I'm getting a wee bit frustrated because I'm seeing people less qualified than me get interviews there, and I'm wondering what the heck the problem is. No offense to the accepted peeps, congrats (honest), but I don't get why I keep being overlooked. Even my DO letter is from a PCOM grad!

UMDNJ never said anything to me, but they cashed my check. I'll probably go rejectionless from there for years to come.

I hear ya on the UMDNJ. In other news I'm prob gonna take LECOM out of my signature soon..yeah PCOM! (I'm at 80% vs 20% right now towards PCOM)

I'm still waiting on a rejection letter from Jefferson, myself.

I figure it's a safe bet I'm not in their fall 2008 class, given that they started classes in August. :meanie:

I would say yes, they are probably also applying ACGME. It might also suggest that students are more prepared to take the USMLE but I'm not drawing conclusions.

considering that most students didnt take part in the AOA match this statistic is useless. In philly there is very little reason to stay osteopathic sinceit is very DO friendly. A lot of PCOMs students can match easily into allopathic programs

yea, I didn't notice the numbers at first. My bad. It's like 50% of the class went osteopathic.
