PCOM Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
🙁 If you can relocate I'd definitely check it out. You have airfare already, don't you?

Yeah, I do. But I lined up an interview with Drexel so I'll still be in Philly that week. I know PCOM is a great school, but given that OUCOM is (in my mind) at least in the same realm of quality, I don't realistically see myself choosing PCOM. I'd rather free up their resources to interview and consider other candidates for their 2009 class, than waste time on me.

My apps being reviewed! I wonder when I will find out what they decide....

How soon after getting the complete letter will I have to wait before I hear their interview/rejection response?
I got a letter in the mail on October 4th stating that my file was complete, and I got the interview invitation by e-mail on October 7th. So it was pretty quick for me! Good luck 🙂

Thanks gapjunction for the info and congrats on the interview invite.

I keep seeing all these interviewees every morning. Good Luck guys, and if you come down to philly buy me a lunch and i'll totally put in a good word for you. Me and Deb are BFF 👍

Dann, where are you from? Are you in a burb of philly?

You could say I live in overbrook, but really i'm in phila. on the border.

Does anybody know the average MCAT and GPA for the last class accepted at PCOM (both Philly and/or Georgia, i am interested in both).

I went out and bought the US News Medical School issue, and that got me the stats to basically every DO school except 5. So, I emailed those 5. A few of them replied back, but not PCOM. If anyone knows, please help me out

I know PCOM Philly MCAT is 24. Thats all.

is pcom philly one of the schools that interview in state first and interview the oos a little later in the game??

Can someone actually source those numbers. I've heard 24 for the past couple of years...

and with ~8000applicants I would imagine that number would be a tad higher.

Your stats are dated. Its closer to 27.

You sure? I just went to interview last week and the admission office told us that the average MCAT is 24 for 2007 entering class.

BTW, "Character", I am OOS so PCOM won't selectively choose to interview IS first.

Just thought some of you might be interested. I found this from an earlier post in a 2006 thread on SDN. Here's the statistics from U.S. News for PCOM 2005 entering class:

(Applications In State/Out of State; Interviewed In State/OOS; Accepted In State/OOS; Enrolled In State/OOS):

By number of applicants:
PCOM - (553/3272; 309/259; 237/177; 161/105)

(Interviewed In State/OOS; Accepted In State/OOS; Applied and Accepted In State/OOS):

By Percentage of applicants:
PCOM - (55.88%/7.92%; 76.70%/68.34%; 42.86%/3.21%)

Yeah, I'm not sure about that either. When I went to the open house, they said it was still around 24, and Georgia's was 23.

Hey does anybody know if PCOM has a dress code? If so, is it business casual or what? And to where does it apply to?

Yea I would think its closer to 23 and 24 than 27.

Scores for schools are going up, but not so rapidly that its at 27.

23 or 24 is really low for any DO school. Considering PCOM is recognized amongst one of the best, you better believe it is closer to 27 than your low ball guesstimate. PCOM does not report the classes MCAT scores to US News so when you see it is a 24 that is from closer to 5 years ago.

I had an appointment with one of the Admissions staff like a month ago. He said that they were finishing compiling the numbers, and currently (then) it looked like they were right on with their 24 average, but it might be 25 by the time it's all said and done.

A huge reason I believe PCOM to be considered around the best is because of the city it's in, and thus more opportunity. The MCAT doesn't necessarily need to be up there to be considered the best. (If thats not what you were implying, my apologies)

You are definitely right. Before interview, nothing particularly interests me there except the fact that it's in philly. After the interview, I am very excited about the opportunities there. Adcom and students were telling us about their affiliation with many MD schools like Jefferson, Temple, Penn State, Upenn, etc...which allow their students to do their 3rd and 4th year clinical rotations at and many ended up doing residencies the Universities' affiliated medical centers. I think this is one of the major issues that made PCOM godlike and so popular on SDN.

Hey guys, I interviewed a couple weeks ago (Sept 29th). Does anyone know when we're supposed hear back from the admissions committee?

Any chance it'll be this week? 😛

We have no dress code. I do not get the "where does it apply to" question.

I doubt it. The Dean said the committees will meet late this week and we will get a decision from snail mail (I think) on Oct 20th at the earliest but no later than Oct 31st.

Can anyone tell me what PCOM's grading system is like, i.e. P/F, HP/P/F, or ABCDF? Are there any DO schools on the pass/fail system? Thanks

you get a numerical score 1-100 based on how amazing you are.

To be good enough to move on to year 2 you should hope you are as amazing as the number 70... or perhaps, more amazing

I do not think there are any medical schools that are strictly pass/fail. Everyone in every school I know of gets evaluated at some point.

Anyway, PCOM does percentage just like most places for major course. 90/80/70/60, etc. Some of our smaller courses, though are pass/fail. I think many schools are like this.

does anyone know around what percentage of interviewees are accepted? just curious😱

Ehh but still.

Maybe its a 25.5 or something, but jumping to a 27 is pretty wild. Out of all the DO schools listed, which is like 17 of them, only 2 have a 27 MCAT (Touro Main and North Texas)

I believe UMDNJ-SOM is either 27 or 28 MCAT average (but I don't know if they were in the 17 schools listed...).

Does anyone know how long it has been taking PCOM to send out interviews after receiving the secondary application? I sent PCOMs application like 2 weeks before my PCOM-GA secondary and I received a response from PCOM-GA within like 4 days of them having my secondary.

I sent my PCOM secondary about two weeks ago too but I called them recently and they said even though I sent it, it could take four weeks to process....then there is additional waiting period for your application to be reviewed. So many people apply to PCOM every year so it makes sense that it would take awhile to hear back from them. Hopefully we will hear from them soon. They did tell me that once they have processed my secondary they would send me a letter saying I'm complete or if they are missing anything. GOOD LUCK!!!

I interviewed the first day of PCOM's interview process, 9/24. Prior to that, I sent handed everything in on 8/6 at an open house. I was sent an interview invite on 9/9 via email.

Congrats, Bacchus.

If anyone can help me out here -- so I haven't officially applied to PCOM yet but am looking at the secondary app link -- what is the character limit/word length to the essays, and can you type them directly into the PDF, or do you attach them to a separate paper and send them everything via snail mail?

Thanks!

I'm IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrat, pal. So do they really contact you through snail mail? If so, is it like the undergraduate type, where a small envelope is rejection and a large one is acceptance?

It was a standard 3X9 envelope or whatever envelopes come in. This big envelope myth appears a fallacy to me. Both PCOM and VCOM sent me regular envelopes. I was contacted through snail mail (only took a day) but it did not go to my home address, rather my current address! :-D

For healthcare experience I wrote on the secondary. For why PCOM/DO I used a separate sheet of paper and it was almost full.

congrats on your acceptance!

i was complete in late august, and i still have not heard anything back from either campuses! i'm applying from texas, does that play a factor? i really want to go to the school in georgia>>> i would loooooove to live in Suwanee!!!!!

anyway, does anyone know how often the committee meets to dole out interviews? and when they're meeting next? every time i call, they say i'm still under review... it's been almost two months now that i've been under review, and i'm starting to think that i'm going to be under review until they send me the rejection letter lol

why can't they just say if applications have just been rejected or are on the alternate list or whatever? these two months have been torture.

That actually could play a role I know schools are very careful about "treading" on others ground. You can combat it though if you keep updating and calling them to let them know of your interest. You have to go out of your way to show them or else they may pass you by for that reason.

I'm in too! I got my letter today. I interviewed on October 1. I can't wait, it was my first choice. I hope to see some of you there in the fall!

Like I said, I think my case may be unique.

Bacchus, I'm so excited for yoU! was that you first choice? Let's hope the balla way of hand deliverin your application is the kicker. I did the same thing and I interview December 1st!!!

Hhaack, congrats to you too!!!

I was thinking maybe I should hand deliver my deposit? I'm 75% sure I'll be depositing, but VCOM is still on my shoulder with quite a presence. UGH.

Personally, I think PCOM should win your inner debate. On the other hand, your rejecting does open up a seat for say.... me. baha

PS, I enjoy your avogadro shout out, i don't know how long youve had that, butt it made me smile today when I noticed it.
