Some of the rotations are just a short drive from the school, and everyone who picks one of the Atlanta blocks will do IM at Gwinnett Medical Center, which is right down the road, and the second-busiest hospital in the state (only Grady is busier). The EM rotation there is supposed to be fantastic too, and I've heard good things about their surgery service.
I am doing almost all my 3rd-year rotations within about 10 minutes of campus, with a couple exceptions that I chose intentionally: I'm doing neurosurgery in Oklahoma City because there aren't many neurosurgery services who will take a 3rd-year, but this one will, and I heard the guy is a good teacher. Plus I want to get good at neuro, so this will be my 3rd month in a row of rotations where that will be emphasized (first is psych with a geriatric psychiatrist who does a lot of inpatient stuff, followed by neurology on a service that is supposed to be pretty intense, and then neurosurgery... if I'm not a neuro whiz after that, there is no hope for me). And I'm doing cardiology most likely with one of the Philly affiliates in New Jersey. Supposed to be a very challenging and busy service.
I picked Columbus for family med because I heard it is just a really great service, and I picked a site about 30 miles north of school for surgery because it is my first rotation, I will still be studying for boards, and I wanted something that is a little less intense than Gwinnett.
I think I'm doing 3 rotations at GMC, and 4 more that are just a short drive from school. Realistically, I could easily have set up everything to be within 10-15 minutes of campus if I wanted to.
