PCOM (Philadelphia) Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
When you interviewed on 1/19, did they tell you when you should expect a response? I interviewed on 1/31... I was kind of banking on a reply today even though they told us 2/15 haha. No such luck!

they told us 2/15 as well... i think the weather may have delayed it a bit though. i was really hoping to get my letter on yesterday also...

congrats to all those accepted!!!!
I am waiting for a letter also, and when I checked my campus box at school there is a package slip b/c my box is so tiny but the ups store to pick up the package is closed til monday. Did your letter come in a small envelope or more of a folder size? Sorry this is specific but I just don't know if this package is from the school or another package someone else sent me.
Thanks!!

Accepted students, did the good news come in a thick or thin envelope? I must have information!!!

when i was there for my interview they said either way it is just one piece of paper... so you won't be able to tell just from the envelope

False. It is not way thicker, but the acceptance letter is CERTAINLY thicker than the rejection--it has a couple other sheets attached to it. Hold it up to the light and if you see anything about emergency contacts then you're golden

nothing here either. considering i'm not even in PA, i'm not surprised. hopefully, it'll show up early next week.

congrats to all those accepted!!!!

It's a regular sized envelope

I got my acceptance letter today!!! I'm so happy! I live about an hour and a half outside of Philly. There's more than just one piece of paper in it... before I even got to the actual "YES!" letter, I saw the "New student form." Good luck to everyone else waiting! I think if I had to wait until Monday I'd definitely develop a stomach ulcer!

haha the suspsense is much worse now that i know the letters are in the mail. congrats!

i live pretty close to philly, 45 minutes from PCOM. yea its like 4-5 pieces of paper, about things you need to send back and being a quality doctor/student. good luck to everyone!

Rejected. Guess there's always next year. Congrats to those who got in.

Rejected as well. Congrats to the rest of you.

Just got my letter of acceptance!!! 😍😍😍
good luck to all of you who are still waiting to hear!!

Accepted, also 🙂 😍 Best day of my life!

Hey accepted PCOMers,

I live 2.5 hours away and was planning on driving there for my 11am interview, but my email did suggest arriving at 8am for breakfast and such. Do you guys highly recommend arriving early, or do you think that won't really affect my acceptance probability? Because if I drive, I don't want to have to leave at 5am, but if I have to I can just book a hotel I guess...
Thanks so much and congrats!

I'd honestly recommend to just suck it up and drive down early, or get a room the night before. Upon arriving, you'll meet people in the admissions office who could potentially interview you. Also, there will be some helpful information about the interview day, financial aid, etc. Plus, I don't know if you really want to go into an interview after just arriving from a 2.5 hour drive. Getting there early gives you time to relax beforehand, get acclimated with your surroundings, and get your questions answered at breakfast.

I agree with the above poster. I girl I go to school with also interviewed with me on the same day--I was there early and she came in halfway through our lunch with the student affairs guy....it didn't look good to say the least.

Get a hotel and get rested.

I live about 2.5 hours away as well, and decided to go up there the night before which is what I would recommend. Overall, it just makes for a much less stressful day. It allowed me to prepare/relax the night before, sleep until about 7, take my time getting ready, and not have to worry about traffic and arriving on time. I don't think that attending breakfast impacts attendance probability, but it gets the day off to a good start and at my breakfast the Dean stopped by to talk to us for about 20 minutes which was pretty cool. Of my group of around a dozen students, only one didn't come to breakfast (obviously I have no idea if he was accepted or not). Just got my letter of acceptance today, now a tough decision to make between schools...good luck at your interview!

I hope that if you do decide on PCOM that you don't bring the crap that is the Washington Redskins with you....

haha can you tell I made this account right around the start of football season? If I was making my account today it would be probably be...OriolesFan. any better?

I guess its actually ok to have it...the embarrassment of supporting such a team is punishment enough.

For anyone attending PCOM, do you have any things that you dislike about the school/program/city/anything related? Or was there anything you wished you knew before choosing or beginning attendance at PCOM? Thank you!

My application was complete in late October as well and I have not gotten an interview either. Does anyone know if out of state status delays an interview?
I just got an invite to interview for March 28th. Yeaaa I am so excited!!!

Yikes-- post interview rejection people, can you comment at all about how your interviews went? I was a bit surprised to see you two were outright rejected post-interview instead of being put on the wait list at least......

congrats! when did you apply there..and mind sharing some general stats? I applied realllyyy late (like 2 weeks ago) so seeing if i still have any chance.

My letter says that they cannot give me a final decision at this time. And that I should retake my MCAT. They said they would keep my account active and review everything again when I retake my MCAT.

This letter is post-interview.

Are they indirectly rejecting me?

I wouldn't try to over analyze their letter. Since they said they would review your application if you re-take your MCAT, then I wouldn't consider that a rejection. Rejection literally means, "Sorry. Apply next year."

Your letter is saying, "Impress us with a new MCAT score and you may have a shot".

thats what it sounds like to me too, but is it physically possible to do that during this cycle? can people even take the mcat before may right now? if not, then i dont know if this cycle can happen.

Honestly, I would just call the admissions office and see. However, it seems like it's not even feasible to retake the MCAT for this cycle. I mean, let's assume you haven't been studying again (after all, why would you?). The soonest you could take it would probably be late March. Then, it's another month to report to AACOMAS. PCOM's deadline for final deposits to hold spots is April 15th. It seems like you would basically be retaking the MCAT to get on a glorified waitlist and hope to get accepted in the summer. This could happen, mind you, as I've heard students have been accepted on the first day of orientation week in August.

I'm surprised they told you to improve your MCAT, since the widely-held opinion is that if you're offered an interview, it means your GPA and MCAT are good enough for an acceptance.

I don't understand this either. You were good enough to get an interview with the MCAT score you had....😕

Wow I'd rather get rejected then get that letter. It would be way too much stress to restudy for the mcat if you're in school right now, and if you don't do better, you're screwed and out a few hundred bucks. What did you get that they said wasn't good enough?

I scored in the low 20s.

I had to email the director. She said I should take it before June and to email her when I plan on taking it.

Good luck, man.. are you gonna try for that?

hey guys ^^

I have just a few questions. I apologize if some of these have been answered elsewhere. I browsed through the first few pages of the thread.

As for this "What health care related experiences have you had," can I just attach my full CV and say "please refer to my CV"? If not, can the response be in list (bullet points) form or have to be in paragraph form? I'm not sure how detailed they want for each experience.

Also, are there separate AdComs for the PA and GA campuses? I was hoping to use similar responses on the two secondaries, but may need to change things up a bit if it's the same group of people.

thanks.

Rejected. Guess there's always next year. Congrats to those who got in.

I know this is hard to probably talk about but if you don't mind can you give me any tips on the interviewing process or the interview itself. I just had my first interview the other day and I bombed it and I really do not want to mess up PCOM's interview!

Thanks my application was completed in October. I have a 3.2 Science gpa and an average MCAt score.

Thanks!

yea, I'm gonna study and take it in May. I would have done the same thing if they sent me a rejection letter. I want to reapply with a better score this summer.

hope you make it 🙂

been checking my mail everyday since my interview 02/02/11...this week should be the final countdown 😱

Hey question? How's fat albert doing? Oh, wait. He was charged with assault and now is being accused of sexual assault.....other than that and other than you guys giving us a second rounder for a defunct QB, I'd' say you guys are doing great. I kid, I kid.

But now we move into the Nats just getting manhandled by the best rotation in major league history

Hey guys. Can some of the out of state acceptees please post their stats. I know the average for accepted students in 3.45 and 27, but I suspect these numbers are very misleading for us oos applicants. I am applying here next cycle from NJ and I would like to know how much higher the numbers are for oos.

Its no fun if we don't know which team(s) your allegiance is to?
As for FAT AL.............just a bad investment, nothing more. We'll be fine with or without him

I think it's clear (from the best rotation in baseball comment) that I'm from Philly.
Bleed Eagles Green! Remember that time Vick had six touchdowns against you guys? In washington.

haha i see you SpaceDoc...

and I love Eagles fans, can always just ask how many championships they've won

Except that response doesn't get me amped up though. The eagles may not have won a championship in a while, but they are competitive every year, can you say the same about the redskins?
