PCOM (Philadelphia) Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

any idea how much of the class is filled?
or how many interviewed are typically accepted?

I interviewed on February 7th and still haven't heard anything. Happy waiting!!

@Oshkosh77, did they give you a cut off date for when you'd hear about the committee's decision? For example, Deb B. told us that if we didn't hear from the school by March 15th that we could assume we didn't get in.

i feel for you guys... :xf: hope you all get in!

She told us March 15th as well. I think what's throwing me off is the tour guides told us they heard within 2 weeks. Only 2 more weeks of waiting!

those of you being accepted vs. waitlisted/rejected what are your stats?

any idea how much of the class is filled?
or how many interviewed are typically accepted?

Last year, 66.7% of those students invited to interview were accepted.

Oh, and I'm withdrawing my acceptance tomorrow, so I hope one of you gets it!

Got my acceptance letter today. It was dated Feb. 28th. Hope everyone else gets the good news as well.

Congrats! When did you interview?

Edit: oh I see now, the 16th. I interviewed the 24th and REALLY hoping for good news.

Congrats to all of those accepted! Has PCOM started wait listing applicants yet-and does anyone have any idea what the movement on the wait list looked like last year?

Wondering what you guys thought; is it pretty much the end of the road if I haven't received an interview invite yet from PCOM? I haven't been pre-interview screened or anything, I just haven't heard anything from the school.

ACCEPTED!!!

Interviewed Feb 14.
3.2, 32

I'll be here in the fall unless my Harvard acceptance comes through. 😛

I interviewed Feb 14th as well, but I'm stuck at work until 5 to see if there is anything in the mail!
Is everyone who received acceptances in Pa, or have the letters gotten further yet?

I received it in an email.

Congrats Everyone....I will also see you in the fall! Actually is everyone attending the accepted students brunch in April? I may be meeting some of you then! Congratulations again!

Hi, I am having a supremely hard time deciding between PCOM and NSUCOM 😕

PCOM Pros:
-Close to family & friends (I'm from PA and went to school in NYC)
-No dress code
-Non-mandatory lecture (though I think I'm the sort of person that would go to lecture, because I like writing info out)
-cheaper to move-in
-may be easier to live without a car first year (not bringing a car first year)
-recorded lectures first & second year
-large number of affiliated hospitals

PCOM Cons:
-crime in Philly? (heard Philly is a bit rough around the edges)

NSUCOM Pros:
-super friendly students (got a good vibe when I visited and spoke w students)
-new area/culture/experience
-nice weather
-someone I care about lives there
-Kaplan board prep course included in tuition

NSUCOM Cons:
-seems harder to survive without a car
-hot & humid summer (I will be walking to class that first year)
-dress code & mandatory lecture (though I'v heard this isn't really that much of an issue & I would probably go to lecture anyway)
-much higher move-in costs
-recorded lectures mainly in second year (first year may have a few recorded lecs)

BOTH SCHOOL PROS(also, what I think is most important overall):
-both have good clinical experience
-->NSU rotation sites: http://medicine.nova.edu/do/clinical_rotation.html
-->PCOM affiliated hospitals: http://www.pcom.edu/clinical_educati...te_lists_.html
-similar match rate (https://www.do-online.org/pdf/AOA%20...02009%20tl.pdf)
-similar tuition price
-both have strong reputations (so I've heard, though I'm more familiar w PCOM's strong clinical reputation)

In General:
-I'm leaning towards family medicine (though that could change)
-I don't currently have a preference as to where I want to practice

Thoughts? Corrections to what I've heard? I know it's about the right fit, but I could see myself happy at both institutions and I believe that a big part of where you end up for residency is up to how hard you work. Maybe an outside perspective will help. Thanks in advance!!! 🙂

As for Philadelphia's safety, my car was broken into a block from the school, in a hotel parking lot next to TGIF... and I've been told PCOM is in a safe area of the city!

I interviewed on 2/7 and got my letter today that I have been waitlisted. Does anyone know how many people typically get accepted from the waitlist? AI am supposed to let LECOM know by March 9th if I'm going there and pay the $1500 deposit, so I'm not sure what I should do....

I interviewed the 21st and am 'on hold' for further review. Big let down, I wanted so badly to officially be in. Does anyone from last year's cycle, by chance, have any recommendations on anything I can do/send in the meantime? They said they're interviewing until the end of March and that I will definitely have news by April 22nd.

Definitely put down your deposit at LECOM if you haven't put down a deposit anywhere else or if you would go to LECOM if you don't get into PCOM. You will not hear anything about the waitlist movement until April. Movement just depends on who drops out and can move through the first week of class. They usually replace the student who dropped with a student very similar (gender, age, stats, etc.). If you have any updates to your resume in the meantime, you can definitely submit them to the admissions office. Letter of intent may help too!

Good-luck! Sorry about the bad news, but at least you still have a shot! And if not, I have a few friends at LECOM and it is a great school.

I would give you a biased answer so I can't tell you anything else you don't already know. But I just wanted to point out your last statement isn't necessarily true. Getting a good residency DEFINITELY involves more than just hard work on your part...it involves making the right connections which are, in my opinion, more vitally important than simply getting good grades and working hard on rotations.

I know that the roommate situations in Philly are wayyyyyyy sweeter.

Does anyone from last year's cycle, by chance, have any recommendations on anything I can do/send in the meantime? They said they're interviewing until the end of March and that I will definitely have news by April 22nd.

Hey I also interviewed on the 21st and received the April 22nd Hold letter. It didn't seem as bad as I thought it to be at first. The letter just means they don't want to reject you in my opinion. It depends on the quality of the applicants interviewing the rest of the month, how many people withdraw acceptances, etc etc. It also could be seen as a precursor to the wait-list in many cases.

Also the wording of the letter said a decision will be made no later than the 22nd, implying that a decision could be made at any time in the meantime. Not a traditional hold, which is basically we will look at your application on April 22nd, which is the worst kind of hold. So what you do between now and 4/22 is critical to your decision IMO.

I've read some previous threads that taking a pro-active approach has paid off in previous years for people placed on hold. I'm not sure of what they sent in, but getting in contact and sending stuff to them is definitely not frowned upon. Also, out of state applicants are more likely to be placed on hold which was of no surprise to me since I am out of state...

This sucks for me PCOM was my first choice, now I gotta throw away more deposit money on other schools because of one hold letter. Meh! That letter just cost me 2k! Hey best of luck and everything. Teamwork is essential. Hope we both get off hold, and get in!

also the april 22nd deadline may be after another deadline they set. i (and assume the rest of the group that got accepeted at the same time as me) has to pay 2000 by april 18th after already paying the 250 hold money. so, if people withdraw right before then, then spots will be open by the 18th, then they will reconvene the 22nd thus offering possible opens spots. this is all just an assumption in my part tho

Should have stayed at the Hilton and parked in the PCOM garage. It's safe, but not 100% crime free. Sorry about your car. Hope everything else went well. 🙂

Yay, recently got accepted to PCOM! After looking through some of the posts, I've noticed that there's talk about a luncheon for the new students. Does anyone know the details of the luncheon in April for students who were accepted? I can't find anything about it on the PCOM website. Thanks!!

I received an e-mail about it at the end of January. The e-mail said that they would be sending out actual invitations at a later time, but wanted to let us know ahead of time so we could save the date. From the e-mail I know it is on Sunday April 10 from 11 am - 1 pm. I am sure we will be receiving invitations sometime this month. That is all I know so far.

Dear PCOM,
Review my app already. It has been 5 months. This is getting ridiculous. Thanks

Could have a problem with that 7 man, sorry to say. My roommate was granted an interview, and also had a 7 on a section, but they told him they were 'waiting to make a decision until he took the january mcat'.....one he wasn't scheduled to take. They require, i believe, at least an 8 on every section.

I was accepted with a 7 in physical sciences last year. They want to see at least an 8 in each section but it's not a set requirement. I didn't have any connections to the school either, and I have a friend who was also accepted this year with a 7 in BS. A lot depends on when your application is in and how everything else looks. I think what is hurting you the most is that your most recent MCAT wasn't submitted until last week. They are almost done with interviews and usually towards the end of the year a lot of people with high scores get turned down. Just the unfortunate aspect of a rolling admissions. Trying sending in a quick letter of interest. It may definitely help!

Good luck!:luck:

Thanks! I realize the 7 isn't great, but I have 8-9 years of working with patients as a general dentist. I took my premed prereq's in 1994-95.

I am also throwing my hat into the ring for the next application cycle. 😀 I graduated from dental school in 1995. Good luck to you.:xf:

NICE!! Studying for the MCAT was a challenge - actually that prevented me from applying earlier, but I decided to give it a shot this year.

What exactly is a "letter of interest" and when would you send one?

Im in the same boat - finished my pre-med req's in 95 before grad school. Now a postdoc- and thought i would give it a shot this year, but applied late bc of MCAT. Still havent heard. I am dying to hear from this school, though!

GPA (undergrad) 3.8
GPA (grad) 3.9
MCAT 8P, 9V, 10B

At the interview on the 21st, they said the class was 2/3rd of the way full. They also mentioned that they don't conduct interviews unless there's open spots.

wow. I thought I'd be the oldest person in my class. What made you decide to go into medical school after putting the time and effort into becoming a dentist?

Has anyone from Feb 23rd heard back?

I interviewed on the 24th, finally broke down and called PCOM today. The lady that answered the phone was nice but told me she didn't have any news at the moment. She said they hadn't created letters for my group yet, although she thought that the committee did meet recently. She said I could expect to hear sometime next week.

Deposit at another school is due Monday lol. Figures...

Interviewed today...loved it. If anyone is interested, admissions told us that the class was 83% full as of Monday. They will interview until it is at 100%.

What exactly is a "letter of interest" and when would you send one?

It's basically correspondence sent to a school after you submit your primary application in hopes of being granted an interview. Often times, it's sent by regular mail so that the admissions staff has to pull your app to add the letter to the file.

There's also what's called a "Letter of Intent," which is similar to a Letter of Interest, but it informs the school that if accepted you will matriculate there. They're often sent post-waitlist.

It's difficult to gauge whether Letters of Interest actually help or not. It's conceivable that students who sent letters and were then offered interviews would have received them even if they didn't send a letter. Bottom line, I wouldn't send a Letter of Interest unless you have updates (new research project, volunteering, new transcript), or it just seems like begging. It's best to show a school you're still interested by telling them what you've been doing to make yourself a better applicant.
