PCOM (Philadelphia) Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
havent heard a thing...complete in sept.

33/3.6

cmon pcom
Probably a silly question, but did you call to confirm? I actually was 'complete' for a couple of weeks but they didn't mark me as such because they didn't notice one of the required letters in the packet I sent out till I had them look through it when I called. That was back in late August.

Well your stats are definitely above their average so best of luck to you!

I'd be interested to see how much of the class is already filled at this point. As far as I know they accept a big portion of their interviewees.

Also, they seem to put a lot of stock in your LORs/ECs/statement, or at least it's not just about the numbers.

Good luck to everyone still waiting!

This is the number one thing i would say to those of you waiting for invites, acceptances, etc.

There have been threads on PCOM's 'wild admissions' in that they will not invite someone with a 3.8 and 32 MCAT but will invite someone with a 3.3 and 27 (me). It all depends on your overall 'feel' as an applicant, your well-roundedness if you will.

The students at PCOM-GA told me when I interviewed for them, that PCOM-PA wouldn't start interviewing my crop until 2011, at the earliest. Is that accurate (Complete back in Sept./Oct.), or should I call the PCOM-PA office?

your crop?

Did anyone else have issues typing responses into the PCOM secondary form? Mine keep disappearing as soon as I move the cursor.

The only place I had an issue was where you are to write about your clinical experiences. Mine weren't going to fit in the space so I just put it after the essay.

The rest of the form was ok for me.

PS- sappy moment, but I just wanted to tell you guys that I think you've been super nice on here. It's making me more anxious and hopeful about PCOM. 🙂 SDN is strangely affecting the rankings I have for the schools I'm interested in. haha

I believe he was referring to those who submitted secondaries in sept/oct.

I am part of that "crop" as well, and have still not heard anything from them yet.

Who knows. There's also people who were complete in August and haven't heard anything, such as one of the posters above, and myself.

Submitted both an update/interest letter and a DO LOR early in November. Will probably do what that one poster did and call up this week to see if my application is in order and that it actually is complete, not that something is missing somehow.

Just got an invite for Dec 15th! I was complete in Oct like many of you. It takes forever for some reason, but don't count yourself out yet!!

Man.. I'm waiting to hear back from PCOM too! I've heard many good things about this school, and I just want an interview. I called to ask what's going on, but the admissions lady I talked to said, "If your application status is complete and everything has been received, then all I can do is tell you to keep checking your emails." Kinda lame. I was done in early September.
For anyone who has already had their interview, did you like it? Are they family-friendly? Do they have a nice gym? KCOM has a rock-climbing wall... 😳

PCOM really is amazing. Everyone there was so nice and it made me feel really comfortable. The admissions office has a wall of windows (they call it the "fish bowl") and all the students were flashing us the thumbs-up and telling us how great we would do in the interview as they walked to class. The campus looks small, but Evans is 6 floors and houses mostly everything. The weight room is on the small size, but there was plenty of room for everyone. Plus, the Philadelphia 76ers practice in the main gym in the Activities Center. Oh, and there's a basketball court on the roof, which was pretty sweet.

I am excited for the rooftop basketball and racquetball courts (not on roof)

wait, what!??!! the 76ers and PCOM share a facility?! i think i'll be the happiest person in the WORLD at pcom.

Ya bro... Once you get in, we can play some 2-on-2 with Evan Turner and Andre Iguodala!

mind you the 'rook' who has been playing like garbage

I meant we were taking them on a game of 2-on-2, as in you would guard andre haha

Yeah. Control the staring when you're in the cardio/weights area of the gym and working out next to one of them 😉.

Which players did you do that to? You ever see anyone use the racquetball courts there?

 nevermind then. i'd rather not get a pair of nuts in my face.

 that's pretty sick. when i was growing up we had an NBDL team in town and i used to "workout with" joseph forte and others. good experience when you're a 14 year hoops junkie.

😆

if no one uses them, and assuming i get in, i'll play with you!

Anyone else have to wait 2 months for an interview?

I got invited on Nov. 17 and the interview is on January 24th.

Hi all. I'm interested in PCOM and had a few questions related to my specific situation.

I am currently a post-bacc premedical student at La Salle University in Philadelphia. I completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology at the George Washington University with a GPA of 2.8. After deciding to pursue a career in medicine, I retook several of my lowest undergraduate grades. Having never taken any premedical Science courses as an undergraduate, my Science GPA should be approximately 3.8 after completion of the program. However, my cumulative GPA will be approximately 3.3 with repeated coursework. In terms of extracurricular activities, I have a good deal of shadowing experience and have gained a lot of direct patient contact through a previous job as an ER scribe. I also play sports and am a musician. I have not yet taken the MCAT.

I'm interested in knowing where I stand as far as applicants go. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Well I'm not sure many schools will look at you without the MCAT. Seeing as the first MCAT won't release scores until March 1, you'll have a hard time with meeting deadlines. If you take it and apply early on in the cycle in July next year, you should have a decent chance, especially if you do well and youre In State.

I concur. This cycle is too late. But, if you start earlier next cycle and have a decent MCAT, I would say you look pretty decent.

You have a lot going for you. Your overall GPA is on the low side, but still within the standards for DO schools. Your science GPA is great and might stand out. As far as extracurriculars go, it seems like you are well-rounded. I think this is important to PCOM. I'm a musician as well, and in my interview, most of the conversation was about music and my shadowing experiences. The MCAT is really the last step for you. PCOM will accept an MCAT from January 2011, but the odds would be against you, since much of the class will be spoken for at that point. Plus, if you haven't been studying, it would be extremely difficult to prepare in a month. I recommend waiting until next cycle, taking the MCAT only when you're ready. If you score pretty well, I think you'd be a good applicant. Are you a PA resident?

ACCEPTED!!!!
this is such an amazing school!
good luck to everyone!!!

Congrats – Christmas came early for you!
If this is your #1 school, I'll see you next year!

Hey everyone! I think I posted earlier on in this thread but I never sent back my secondary (snail mail makes me a slacker). I decided not to do it after I got accepted to Temple, which I loved, and I'm like 95% sure I'll be matriculating there. I just wanted to say "Good Luck!" to all of you still hoping for love from PCOM. I have friends from high school that attend (1 in the DO program and I think 2 in the Psy.D. program) and they all seem to love it there. Maybe we'll run into each other one day during clerkships in 3 years. 😀

interview invite today. i think i was complete sometime in late september / early october. interview scheduled for feb 14.

3.3 gpa / 31 mcat

I'm surprised you didn't get an acceptance at Jefferson with a 39...

did you let them know that you only wanted to go to schools in the region?

Interview Invite for 2/14 as well!! Its my first so I'm very excited!!

Complete email 10/25
UGPA:3.5
MCAT:31

I was looking at last yrs thread and PCOM had a pretty quick turnaround time. About a month after they were complete, they would hear back from the school. Whats up with them this yr!!!

i know at pcom-ga they were short on admissions staff, so maybe a similar situation in philly.

Yeah, me too, and I did tell them that. I think I bombed the interview, though. I do think I'll come off the HPWL (I'm going to send them an update/LOcontinuedI in the next few weeks because they have started taking people off the HPWL around January or February before), but honestly, I think Temple may be a better fit for me. We'll see. 🙂

Two things. 1) PCOM sent me a christmas card which i thought was a very nice touch. 2) They finally sent me an email confirming they rec'd my deposit and will be sending my 'binder' soon.

It's getting more and more official
