PCOM (Philadelphia) Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I wouldn't worry too much yet. If you look at last year's thread, people would wait for a while before getting an interview. So, it doesn't appear that they grant interviews according to completion date–People complete in summer could get interviews after someone who was complete late in the cycle. Also, besides being a bit PA-biased, it is hard to really tell what they want–They really look for a complete applicant.

Hope that helps somewhat. Good luck!

has anyone on this thread been invited to both the philly and ga campus?

will be withdrawing my application; I hope one of you gets my spot. good luck guys!!

i've withdrawn from 2 schools via email and they were polite and responded to make sure that i was sure haha

Well that's nice. I withdrew from three schools via email and I heard nothing at all back haha

Has anyone received a pre-interview rejection from this school? Just seeing if they send those out or just wait till the end like some other schools.

I'm pretty sure that they don't send pre-interview rejections. Your application will be "under review" until the end of the cycle.

I would agree with ND10. When I applied to DO programs for 2009 entrance, I didn't receive a "formal" rejection until April.

Congrats to everyone who has been accepted!!!!!! -now hopefully they will be handing out more interview invites to oos-ers :xf:

Congrats to all the new acceptees! Glad to have more classmates. Now join the c/o 2015 thread and the FB group so i can finally have some fun.

FB group is pretty quiet with its 9 members haha. Can you post the PCOM 2015 thread here? Thanks!

Isn't there an amendment in the constitution about cruel and unusual punishment? Or is it that they are giving us as much chance as possible?

👍 Total agreement here!

Just got my acceptance letter in the mail yesterday. Was dated November 24, 2010. Interviewed on November 8th. Application was released to PCOM on 7/29/10.

Mcat Scores 26Q first time, 27O second time.

GPA is 3.4 science, 3.2 overall.

Was previously / currently an airline pilot, maybe they took pity on me *shrug*

Goodluck.

What airline?

My dad has been a captain for Continental for almost 30 years now (I know it is now United)

Yeah, I wish I could play the "other schools love me, but I love youuuu 😍, so please can I interview???" card. With sad puppy eyes.

JEEZ!!!! Don't be such a school hog! Some of us are still waiting to get into ONE school...spread the love! lol

hog? we cant helped being wanted :meanie:

sorry guys/gals .. I know, getting a little greedy😳 just PCOM sounds so cool. good luck though!!:luck: they need more SDNers, ha

edit: excuse me for sounding so whiney lately or unappreciative. acting a bit uncharacteristically from being anxious for info. I'll try to chill.

No need to call anyone a school hog 😛

I applied to one DO school, got accepted to one DO school, and I will accept one DO school. P.C.O.M. was actually THE school I wanted to get into, so i'm very happy.

hey I wasn't the only crazy with this strategy! PCOM was my first (and only, really) choice all along. Whew. So relieved. Risky business 🙂

I applied primary to 11, secondaries into 6, but all I want was PCOM. Only interview I went on--canceled the rest. I don't know why I ever applied to anything else except PCOM. I really can't see myself going anywhere else for school.

Hi Guys, do you think it looks better to apply to both campuses? I'm thinking maybe it shows you really want to go to PCOM regardless of where it is. Thoughts?

A lot of people apply to both (I did), but I wouldn’t necessary say that it looks better. PCOM looks for students that are interested in staying in the area of the school (which is why you see a lot of students at the Philly campus from the area, and a lot of students at the GA campus from the area). I don’t think it would hurt to apply to both, but I would decide which one you would chose over the other, and then cater your secondary for that particular campus to that.

I spoke to the admissions people before I decided to apply to the school and asked them about applying to the GA campus. Seemed to me that it was almost discouraged unless you have a specific preference to practice there. They made sure to emphasize that the GA campus was created/catered to address physician shortage in that area specifically. I only applied to PCOM-Philly since I knew I wanted to stay around here.
Probably wouldn't hurt your chances either way, but that was just the impression I got.

Got accepted to class of 2015

Was wondering if anyone will be commuting from far west philly (York, Lancaster, Coatesville) area. Would like to find a carpooler or 3 to make the drive more enjoyable / costly. Send me a message.

Finally got invited for an interview!!!!! So excited! I can't wait until January 31st. I hope it goes well & that I get accepted.

I am a pre-med student very interested in PCOM. For those already accepted, congrats. Could you let the rest of us know what kind of resume you had? such as GPA, MCAT, and ECs

Thanks

I just submitted my secondary about 2 weeks ago... I hope I'm not too late in the game 🙁 Not gonna lie, I'm completely freaking out.

I don't think they have a cut-off MCAT 30... I might be wrong though.

I got in the other day without a 30 (not really close to a 30) but I think it was my PS that pushed me up. It's really hard to judge what they want I didn't even think I was competitive and it ended up being my first interview and acceptance.

I did call before I got my interview and I think it helped.

A HUGE congrats to all of you who have been accepted!

I interviewed the 11/22 and got a "Delayed Decision" Letter postmarked 11/24.

I still have a chance! I hope I get in! GPA 3.6/sci 3.6/ 27mcat

Good Luck to the rest of you too!🙁

I'm very interested in this school and I am curious as to how they view military persons. I've been somewhat successful in my military career [8 yrs enlisted, 1.5 yrs as an Officer, combat arms]. Did the majority of my undergrad while on active duty with a 3.17 in both. I have significant medical/research/"leadership" experience particularly in some rather hostile conditions. I have yet to take the mcat and I am doing so this Jan. coming. Quite removed from my undergrad classes and taking it right now in my prep course. Curious as to whether it'd be in my best interest to apply here. Anyone who can actually tell me yes/no [particularly someone from a similar background] is appreciated. Thanx.

Q. Who attends PCOM?
A: In 2008, the entering D.O. Class of 2012 consisted of 267 first-time students from different colleges and states. The average class GPA was 3.43, the science GPA was 3.32 and the mean MCAT score was 26. Students averaged 24 years of age with a range from 20 to 42; 49 percent are women and 18 percent are under-represented minorities.

Well add me to the list. I also have decent stats-at least I thought I did. I am getting the impression that in order to be looked at you need a 30 mcat, which I don't. :scared:

lol.

Do any DO schools have an average MCAT that would support the idea that they only take people with an MCAT >30? I doubt WashU even has that

Dont give up hope! You've got good stats. Are you OOS?

Hey, I was accepted with the last batch; interviewed on 11/15 and got the letter on 11/29 even though they told us it wouldn't be until 12/1. 🙂 Even joined the fb group.

29O/3.7/OOS

I called and kind of played dumb to get a conversation going with someone on the admissions committee (not a secretary) I asked if they could make sure everything is in. Then since I had them on the phone I asked if they could skim my app and tell me if its competitive or if they have any advice for me. Something in my app struck her so we just started talking about it. It was good because we got off subject and she was able to just talk to be and form an opinion about me. If that doesn't happen other good questions to ask are "where are you in the process?" "How much of the class is filled?" "Whats the normal waiting time to hear back?" "what was the average GPA, MCAT, w.e. last year" or even a question about the curriculum to show you have researched the school. They won't always answer these questions firmly or at all but it can be good just to keep them focused on you for a little (not too long!).

Good luck!

havent heard a thing...complete in sept.

No interview invites in the past few days huh? PCOM is killing me. Every school is killing me. I never imagined that it would take > 2 months to review an app. There is just not that much to read.
