Has anyone else gotten a reminder notice from Student affairs without getting an intial notice? I am specifically refering to the information I just got from them about our orientation and other first week activities.

I do not know what you all are thinking but I am astonished by the complete lack of infomation coming from an institution that wants us to give them almost $200k over the next four years.

i see your point B, its annoying, and i can see how if we were not part of Summer Start how awkward it would be just to show up on orientation day

"hi welcome to the next 4 years of your life!"

oh well...

Reminder about what? I didn't get the initial or the reminder. This is piss poor, I hope this is not indicative of the rest of the year.

I haven't received anything either (well, besides the info about PCOM Banner web services), and am feeling a wee bit more anxious because of the lack of information. At least I **finally** found out about my financial aid offer--the info's up on the PCOM Banner website place. We only have a couple of weeks left!! Also what's up with the white coats? Don't we need them for orientation, and don't they need our coat size? Haven't gotten that letter either...

Can any current PCOMers suggest anything/give us information about orientation??

White coats are provided by POMA for the white coat ceremony at the end of the week. All I know is I am showing up the morning of the 10th and hopefully they will have our regular schedule then.

You guys got Banner information? I never got anything about it, only the letter a few months ago saying that it was forthcoming. I have to agree, this had better not be indicative of the rest of the year!

Hey Ultimate-

How did you know that orientation starts the 10th? I thought it was the 9th?!
Hopefully, they'll get on the ball and tell us when orientation starts, (including the time and date) before orientation starts!!
🙄

Who's on freaking first.... 😕

Ok guys, I'll try to "answer" some questions...

You pretty much have heard everything that you are going to hear prior to the start of school. The entire 1st week is nothing but administrative work and all loose ends will be taken care during that time period. Relax and party like a rockstar while you still can. My friends and I were the same way when we were in your shoes last year and believe me everything will be addressed during that 1st week... and I mean everything (email, campus safety, the rec center, academic counseling zZzZzZzZzZ) 😴

Something to look forward to...

A friend of mine is organizing the "social events" for your 1st week. I'm sure they're going to be fun. If the plans are similar to last years, be prepared for a bar tour of old city Philadelphia.

I know that I didn't answer any questions specifically but if you PM me I'll do my best to respond to them in a timely manner.

Oh ya, I almost forgot...

I THINK that orientation begins on Aug,9th. probably at 8am sharp.

I THINK that orientation will be Monday through Wednesday with Thursday and Friday off for personal days. There will most likely be social activities on those days too.

I am totally guessing on all of this. What I can tell you is that us 2nd years officially start class on the 16th so I figure that you are the week before us?! This was the way it was last year.

If I hear any official information I'll pass it along. I'll see you the week of orientation.

PM me with further questions!

Thanks so much Pitt Panther--

Looking forward to seeing you in August!

Orientation is @ 8:30 Monday,Tuesday, and Wednesday. Thursday off unless you are testing out of histology (test @ 11:00). Friday is family day again @ 8:30. Tuesday is the whitecoat ceremony. From what the packet says, show up at Evans Hall. There is no dress code indicated. I would imagine there will be on Tuesday.

Heya Raptor5-

Thanks for the details-
I noticed you mentioned a "packet" in your message. When/where/how did you receive this "packet", and do you suggest I call someone at PCOM to prompt them to get my "packet" as well? 🙄 Just wondering.

Hey-- are you still living outside of Philly or did you and your wife move closer? Are you doing the summerstart program? And if so, how is it? (actually that's a general question for anyone doing the summerstart).

Thanks for the info-- I'll let everyone know if I hear anything further.

I did the Bio-Chem class and it was a great introduction to the sheer volume of information we can look forward to recieving. It was nice to have a small group to start learning in. Over all it was a blast.

As for information, I think that they are sending out half the information to one group and half to another. That or they have no idea what is going on in thier own department.

HNS,

What exactly do you mean by "sheer volume?" Just wondering...

the volume of material was high. Think about Biochem 1&2 w/o labs, and w/o having to know structures presented in 7 days. It was not that bad though. The test was not as bad as I thought it would be. Remember 70 is passing ansd there is probably a curve.

ErinG, still live outside philly. Summerstart was worth the money, oh wait I didn't pay anything for it. It was nice to meet future classmates, professors, and admin people. I feel much more comfortable there and I probably will not need a Paxil or a Xanax for Orientation.(kidding)

For the 2009 class we need to tell them if they want to take the summer biochem class but can not afford it or do not want to pay for it, to request the summerstart throught the admissions office that way they would not have to pay. I emailed deb and told her that I thought I would benefit from the summerstart and she arranged for it.
I would really like to know how they base who has to attend summerstart b/c there were people there that had higher scores than myself and had just graduated college. Some even had graduate degrees. I have my own theories about how they select people for the program, but will keep it to myself.

I just want to get off the freakin' waitlist and go to school with you guys!

Ginkoba,

good luck to you--Hope that the waitlist moves really soon, and that you'll be with us in a few weeks!!

Please keep us posted-

The blackboard now has a section for orientation with required texts, curriculum outline, etc.

Word of advice, there is no "required" text... ecspecially for your first trimester. Talk to the upperclassmen and find out what they used for txt before you purchase.

Myself...

Anatomy
Netter Atlas
Rohen Cadaver Atlas
Chung (Anatomy Board Review Series)
"Big Moore" aka Clinically Oriented Anatomy
Grant's Dissector

Microanatomy
"Histotime" computer program as well as Laser Disk... all of which can be found in the library
I went in on "leasing" a microscope from the bookstore with a group of students to help defray the cost. Make sure that you do not have lab the same day as the person you may want to go in on one with.

Primary Care Skills
Bates Guide to Physical Exam and History Taking

These are the only books that I bought during the 1st trimester... All of which are availiable in the library for free. Becareful about what you buy as you can very easily drop a ridiculous amount of money within your 1st week. Also check around for upperclassmen who may be trying to sell their old books... Anatomy doesnt change from year to year, page numbers do.

Keep in mind that you will be handed a packet which contains all of the embryology and histology notes.

To the IMB/MB students, you can find Dr. T's pictures on Blackboard. They're frighteningly large, by the way.

You think those are big, you ain't seen nothing yet. Wait until we get into the anatomy lectures with about 30 Netter plates imbedded in the powerpoint. Combine that with everyone trying to download them from blackboard and print them 15 min before lecture and you will see some PC rage. 😡

Hey guys-

Raptor5, I noticed you said that we can get info from Blackboard-- how do I access that? I can get on the banner site, but I'm not sure from where I get my user ID for the blackboard site--any hints?

Thanks!
