PCOM vs EVMS

As PCOM is one of the more respected DO schools, and EVMS is perhaps towards the lower end of the MD schools, which would you choose, as a Virginia resident? Would you say "MD over DO always" or "whatever costs less" or "connections/lifestyle in phili are better" ?

go wherever you get the best "feel". does MD vs DO matter to you? because our opinions on the matter should be irrelevant. factor in tuition, location, etc along with this decision but come on, how can people on a forum tell you what you want?

What's the difference in tuition? Do you see yourself in academia or any super competitive residency (radiology, opthalogy, urology, orthopedics, dermatology, neurosurgery)?

Honestly, EVMS unless you get some great scholarship at PCOM or have a really strong need to be in Philly. In general, going to any US allopathic school is going to open more doors for you than any osteopathic school, regardless of how great said osteopathic school is. Also, it sounds like PCOM is going to cost you more than EVMS since you're in-state in Virginia, so don't turn that down.

pcom is a amazing school.. in the capital of the medical world..
evms im not very sure about.. evansvile? indiana..

i think evansvile is a decent area.. its got a great undergrad..

eastern virginia medical school....in Norfolk. I am partial to PCOM bc that is where I am going. If the tuition is better go to EVMS for sure. PCOM is 28,000ish IIRC. Not sure of the cost of living in Norfolk...but in Philly the COL is pretty reasonable. PCOM is HIGHLY respected in Philadelphia....so I wouldnt be playing the whole MD>>>DO game with respect to PCOM..

pcom is well respected.. but evms has rotations at its own hospital.. which means not having to move around as much.. pcom is also somewhat better then this.. but..
evms is better

pcom is 37k i believe.. + phili prices = expensive -.-

Come on now......how are you going to talk down about Philadelphia. One of the biggest cities in the country, and the epicenter of medicine! Norfolk, VA is undoubtedly cool as well for completely different reasons. We have the Mutter museum..how can you beat that 😉

You dont have to move around at PCOM. There are MORE than enough training opportunities here.

Yeah EDIT my post...I meant to type a 3..its 38,XXX...and Philly prices are VERY VERY reasonable. Its highly dependant on where you live within the area though. My first place down here I paid 700 bucks a month for a HUGE one bedroom. My second place I lived in a pretty premium area and paid 1200 a month for a 2 bedroom with stainless appliances and the works. Where I currently live is 1250 a month for a 1 bedroom in a brand new building in a really nice area....so it really is highly variable.

well, all US allopathic medical schools are accredited by the LCME and conform to the same standards. In other words, the education is basically the same at ALL allopathic schools.

Furthermore, having an MD makes things much easier in terms of residency. No matter how long PCOM has been in Philly or how great the education (and I've heard it is good), you'll still graduate a DO and not have as many opportunities.

To each their own. You will absolutely not have any problems rotating at any of the area hospitals. I would say the tuition is more of a factor for the OP than the centralized hospital.

The cost of tuition is a very important factor to me, so I would learn towards EVMS if I were in your position. But I don't know anything about PCOM or any other DO school, so...do your research and most of all, make sure YOU are comfortable with YOUR decision.

PCOM's location is amazing. One of the great outer-Philly neighborhoods in Mainline. I would love to live there. Sixers also practice there

Finally another Phillyite. The location is really great. (minus the traffic) There is a cali pizza kitchen, starbucks, chipotle, and a potbelly essentially on campus! 👍

best part is if you take Bellmont avenue down south, you are in a completely different area and I just love watching the city change in a matter of a short drive.

Are you talking about 76/676? Cuz you are right, its definitely one of the worst highways ever - both ways, almost anytime, day or night. I've learned to avoid that road (I volunteer at a Penn facility near-by).


You probably need a car for PCOM though right? You could probably get away without one for Penn/Drexel/Temple and def don't need one for Jefferson, but I kinda like driving too.

Mainline is also surprisingly affordable affluent area (esp compared to center-city) and its really neat - close to Villanova/St Joseph's and lots of good basketball.

haha "we are penn medicine" "drexel lebow college of business FTW" Its odd they never advertise PCOM medicine...just the PCOM graduate programs. Gotta love how these ads end up most frequently on the back of septa busses...bc they know you will be stuck behind em when they are going 2 mph grrrr!

Besides 76...im just talking about city line ave sucking big time! You would def need a car for PCOM. I dont think I would be without a car at any school in Philly honestly....but I am a car enthusiast...so I dont want to be without a car because I enjoy driving...not because It couldnt be done. One of the RRs has a station a few blocks south on city line so you could def get to center city easily. I live in conshohocken and am planning to buy in conshy in the near future so a car is necessary for me!
