I wouldn't be so hasty to claim that either is better than the other. They are two schools with a different focus. It is very impt to understand the mission of the school to which you're applying. MSUCOM is a very primary-care oriented school, which you can see in the rankings and in other areas (which are more impt). As with all MSU, we serve the state of Michigan, first and foremost. Same with CHM and CVM, and the other colleges of the university. Also, we are involved in a lot of research, mostly basic science (Big 10 School) in pharm, physio, biochem, and carcinogenesis.
PCOM, which I interviewed at but haven't attended, is a private school with many specialty matches. It's an older school, one of the first, in a city with several medical schools (more than in the whole state of Michigan, which bring some advantages). The class is a little bigger, but their facilities are much newer (MSUCOM has access to all of MSU, however). Pennsylvania has a huge DO population, among the top 3 states if not higher. I honestly can't elaborate much past that. I just didn't feel it was the right fit for me. Do I think it's a good school? Hell yes. Will you get a great education there? YES!
Go where your priorities lead you, where you're comfortable and can afford. Where you see yourself for 4 years. I'm happy at MSU, I'm doing well and enjoying med school, would it be the same if I had chosen PCOM? Probably yes, but the same? Most likely not.
It's a choice. Going to any state school (OUCOM, UMDNJ-SOM, MSU, OSU, TCOM), CCOM, KCOM, KCUMB, DMU, PCOM, Western, or AZCOM is great. The others are very good as well, depending on your needs/wants. A DO is a DO, and an MD is an MD; DO=physician=MD. 👍
