PCOM vs UMDNJ-SOM

match list : Negligible, both have good lists. However PCOM sends a lot of its students into ALLO and over 60% into non-primary care.
price : In-state UMDNJ, I believe you get instate tuition after 1 year anyways. So price-wise Its UMDNJ.
rotations : Both very good.
reputation : To some extent PCOM wins here. However this is a moot point.

I would say there's no going wrong with either of these schools.

ya, I wanted to bring up pricing. PCOM is listed as ~ 36 /year on the SDN interview page. I heard that UMDNJ is being raised to 30 /year; is this true?

PCOM doesn't send their students anywhere for residency...the students decide where they want to apply and what specialty they want to go into not PCOM.

Isn't that how all schools do it?

Lets not get into that debate. But you are right which is why analyzing match lists really doesn't help.

PCOM was 38k last year and is 40k this year.

UMDNJ was 26k last year and is 31k this year.

thanks... this is exactly what I was looking for. I was hoping PCOM was only 35.

my roomate is also a first year at UMDNJ--by any chance, did you celebrate your first round of exams in Deptford??

why not? what objective factor could be used to rate schools??? PCOM's affilation with philly hospitals and its reputation has got to be helpful for getting residencies.

Great question! The consensus is, a school is as good as its clinical sites, although this is not a completely objective measurement either.

The way I chose my school, and my degree, was to look exclusively at clinical sites. I asked my girlfriend to get together the rotation sites for each school I was accepted to (MD and DO) and print them as school 'A', 'B', etc. She put the information of the hospital (beds, type of area it was in, how many residents, etc).

This is how I chose PCOM over the other schools I was fortunate to be accepted to; this includes one MD school. I was not, however, lucky enough to even interview at UMDNJ. From what I hear, some of their sites are great, and others not. If you have a significant other or a friend who is willing to spend a couple of hours to help you out, I'd recommend the approach I described.

Good luck and congrats on your acceptances

Dang ... I'm very interested in keeping loans low, so that's a pretty big increase to me 🙁

Here's one objective factor that is very helpful during 3rd/4th year, but no applicants ever mention or think about: associated GME programs.

http://www.opportunities.osteopathic.org/search/search.cfm
(I like searching either by state or by program)

Dr JPH brought it up in one thread a while back, and it makes perfect sense. Why not go to the school that has the most future connections for post graduate education? The more people you know (ie Program Directors) the better chance you have of getting into the residency/fellowship of your choice.

After looking at how many GME programs the school has, look to see how many core rotations are done thru those hospitals. That way you not only get to audition for future residencies during 4th year, but also during the 3rd year. You can also look up top hospitals lists such as US News and see which of those hospitals have departments that are tops in the country; then, if your program has core rotations there, you can ask to do a 3rd year core rotation there, and save a 4th year elective for another specialty/hospital.

Again, if two applicants have the same stats, a PD is more likely to choose the one who he/she is familiar with (ie. by personal meeting or by school affiliation)

It takes some researching effort to look this all up, but it's worth knowing now instead of regretting your choice when you research this during 3rd/4th year.

👍

You will by no means regret your choice during 3rd and 4th year when it comes to PCOM or UMDNJ-SOM. I could easily argue that your opportunities will be greater with UMDNJ-SOM's 3rd and 4th year rotations, but what would be the point? We're not talking about a used Hyundai versus a brand-new Mercedes-Benz. We're talking about a Mercedes-Benz versus a BMW. Some people will prefer the Benz and others, the Bimmer.

Overall, agree because both have excellent core rotation set ups which include GMEs and sub-specialties.

The main difference that I noticed was that UMDNJ students may be more likely to stay w/in the OLOL and Kennedy systems since so many of the GMEs are located there. If someone (not moi) is looking for more variety in residency options, they may want something else. I, on the other hand, would prefer UMDNJ's system because it allows a way to build a large amount of strong contacts during the 3rd/4th year instead of bouncing around from place-to-place and having PDs forget me.

I honestly had UMDNJ as my #1 mainly due to this^ and total cost .... But since I'm OOS, I have some serious thinking to do with the tuition hike..... Is the price now worth it? (BTW: my #1 priority in choosing schools is total cost)

please do... it's why I started the thread.

Although I'm no expert, and my first choice is UMDNJ-SOM purely for monetary reasons, I would argue that PCOM has the better rotation experience. While I don't know what specific hospitals PCOM uses aside from Einstein, I'm sure that what you see in the city is much more diverse than at Kennedy. I think OLOL is a good connection for UMDNJ-SOM, but as someone who currently works at a Kennedy site and sees the students and doctors, I'd say PCOM takes the edge in rotation experience, although I believe both schools offer an above average education. Just my two cents

Current PCOM 2nd year.

Both schools are great. Picking which one to go to comes down to matter of personal preference or flip of a coin.
