I tried to search this question so if anyone has a link please list it.
So I have been sitting on this secondary from PCSOM for like 1 1/2 months. The only thing that is holding me back is that "statement of purpose." I kind of know how to write a statement of purpose, but why do I have to write about "why I should be selected for training as a primary care rural osteopathic physician"? I want to be a pulmonologist or an ER doc. How can I lie to them, and why do they require that you want to be a primary care doc. Is that what they really expect everyone to be? If any PCSOM students can reasure me that they are open minded to any specialty I would appreciate it. And if you can tell me which way to go with this statement. Do they just want my Personal statement? I called them but they never answer!

Has no one applied to PCSOM? Are there any students there now that can tell me more about this school?

I just recently added them to my list (after I'd already submitted AACOMAS). Although, now I wish I hadn't. You're right about the fact that no one ever answers. I called them several times and got no answer so I left a message. Guess what? No one returned my call either. Then I saw their stats: They take 63(ish)% KY residents and another 26(ish)% from surrounding counties. If you're keeping track, that's at least 90%. And did I mention the town only has 6,000 people!! Sheesh. What was I thinking? Good luck.

I am also applying to PCSOM. I'm from KY so I don't mind the small town. Plus there's less distractions. From what I hear the students there do receive a great education. You should really think about going to PCSOM.

I'm currently a 2nd year at PCSOM and, hopefully, I can answer your question.

Regarding your secondary, above all be honest. If you don't want to do rural primary care, don't say you want to. If you want to specialize, talk about how you can apply osteopathic principles to whatever specialty you are thinking about. Although our school's goal is to supply the region with good primary care doctors, there are many students who are thinking of specialties. In my class alone, students are seriously considering neurology, ortho, cardiology, plastics, etc. And you don't have to be from KY to be considered for a spot. I'm from OH and many of my classmates are non-Kentuckians. Obviously there is a preference for people from Kentucky because our school's mission is to serve this and other underserved appalachian areas but that shouldn't keep you from applying.

Hopefully that helps a little... feel free to PM me if you have any other Qs

Hi, I included PCSOM on my AACOMAS application, but I have yet to receive a secondary...how long did it take after submitting your AACOMAS app before you received your secondary?? thanks!

If you want to be honest and impress the commitee, then in your statement of purpose state why it is important to first receive a good primary care education before specializing as a pulmonologist. The school prides itself on giving four years of quality generalist training and then letting students decide whether they want to specialize or not. Just bc you want to specialize does not mean you won't benefit from the training at PCSOM or the rotations in the area, and the school knows that many students who attend will eventually specialize. What they don't want is someone who shows up to class and only wants to hear about the lungs or goes on rotations and slacks off on every rotation except pulmonology. This type of attitude leads to specialists who spend so much time looking at their one area that they miss out on the patient's other issues. So show them you are interested in the whole picture first and then intend to gain further knowledge in the area of pulmonology. I know of students that have done anesthesiology, cardiology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology etc. I am a third year at PCSOM by the way. Good luck.
