So I just came off 28 straight hours on OBGYN rotation (Thanks to the wonders of formal presentations being 7-10am on my post-call day) and I'm about to go to sleep finally when I open my professional e-mail for god knows what reason.

What the s**t is this? I think as I see the e-mail entitled "PE Prep Course". I'm somehow hoping its a crash course being offered in emergent pulmonary embolus treatment because the other likely outcome will make my blood boil. I open it up. Blood boiling ensues.

Why the hell is WVSOM advertising a $675 1.5 day prep class in the COMLEX II PE? Also why the hell are they advertising it to me up in NYC? Doesn't that exam have like a 98% first time pass rate? Doesn't First Aid for Step II CS (MSRP $31.50) say that if you're an american MD or DO student you probably don't need to read 3/4 of the book? Isn't "level II PE prep class" called your 3rd year rotations?

Seriously. This is a test where it is a known fact that you can do ZERO OMT and still pass because of how the scoring is set up. It's an exam where the prep books tell you that the Assessment and Plan, a portion of the grade, *doesn't matter*, it's automatic points assuming you scribble something marginally legible and not likely to kill the patient outright. Its not like anyone is going for the high score... it's a pass/fail test. I realize it is a major inconvenience if you do fail it as its only given in some Philly suburb and you need to refinance your home in order to pay the registration fee to take it.... but seriously... almost $700 to take a PE prep class.

Good lord. IDK if it's the sleep deprivation thats driving me batty, but this is the most absurd thing I've ever seen.

I just registered for PE. $1100, holy ****.

Because schools enjoy easy money from suckers.

And I'm certain they'll get a bunch of people to buy in too. Cause advertising prep classes is playing into med student insecurity. We wonder why the prep course exists, assume we must be unprepared and underestimate the test (we're not) and that prep course is the only way to catch up quickly enough to make up for lost time and effort.

I know OSU-COM had a 100% PE pass rate last year and all they did were 3 CPX exams, which are basically a mock PE with 4 patients instead of 12. And that was free. It's not like the PE isn't expensive enough! I hope anyone considering a PE prep course strongly reconsiders.

I have you thank you all for letting me know that PE was up for scheduling. Seems our school likes to drag its feet with emails.

That said, the prep course is insult to injury to the already costly tests.

Just wait until you are out of school and residency - prep for boards, prep for oral boards, prep for LLSA, etc.. the raping and pillaging not only continues, it gets a higher price tag.
