Alright, let's say that I want to join one of these organizations after graduation and go on foreign assignments, but I'm concerned about safety (2 DWB workers were kidnapped today).

If anyone has any experience with these organizations, are workers allowed to carry firearms on their assignments?

well i was in the peace corps, and you absolutely can not carry firearms. closest thing i had was my swiss army and kitchen knives, but never really needed them. they've got safety and security officers for the country and then report that to the regional sso. in training they've got safety/security sessions and someone from the u.s. embassy usually gives a talk too.

safety really depends on who you are and where you are at what time. you can do your best to minimize danger factors but things still happen. as far as peace corps, they evacuate you before things start to get real bad (like they did for my friends in madagascar).

just curious, why not be a pharmacist after school? looking for something more?

Me and my girlfriend really want to travel the world before we settle down.

Personally, I would rather join the Air Force or Navy as a pharmacist and go abroad. She'd rather join the Peace Corps. (Kinda a conflict there.)

I guess my fears are more driven by watching movies like Blood Diamond and Tears of the Sun.

well in either the military or peace corps, you'd both probably have to get married in order to be together. PC won't take you both together, and i don't know if AF/Navy will let your gf come with you. not sure how far your relationship is...

movies and tv are pretty dramatic. don't let that fill your mind too much. some things are pretty similar, and others are different than you'd expect.

good luck! 🙂

I don't wanna jump the gun but I think we might get married before I graduate.
