Hi there,

Getting out of Peace Corps shortly so it's been awhile since I've finished my undergrad and I had a 3.0 in college. What programs have people done to get themselves ready to apply (i.e. post bacs, masters, etc.)? I am applying to both types of programs but was hoping if I went the Masters route at a particular university, would it be easy to transition into that same school's med school? Has anyone done this before?

HI @PCtoMD

Medical schools (US) look at undergraduate coursework grades separately from graduate grades, so if you're looking to bring up the 3.0, a post bacc would be a better option. The GPA everyone looks at and talks about is undergraduate coursework, even if taken after graduation.

I'm sure folks have transitioned from the same grad school to med school, but medical school is so competitive in general, that I don't think it really gives you a huge foot in the door other than perhaps the excellent research, letters of reference, or experience it could offer. There are a small number of undergrad and post bacc programs that offer some sort of linkages.

AMCAS website offers information about post-bacc programs - they're all over the country.
