I thought I would forever use my beloved Littman Cardiology III (tagged with my name AND pager number), but I set it down for all of 15 minutes in the ER on my very last shift of 3rd year and now it's nowhere to be found, except maybe on Ebay  Anyway, I'm applying to peds so I thought I should get a pedi one... (or maybe not?) Any brand recommendations? Thanks!

There are only two important questions to ask yourself about stethoscopes:
1. Do you have diminished hearing-if yes, consider an amplified electronic stethoscope
2. Do you hear the things you need to hear with the stethoscope you've got (in your case, had).

There seem to be a handful of stethoscope "snobs" on SDN (no offense to them, who are probably otherwise nice and reasonable people) who will forever pooh pooh the LCIII as inferior to other models. But if you heard well with it, who cares. I've had my LCIII since MSI and now into 1st year peds cardiology fellowship. I use the pediatric diaphragm on it. It's done me just fine. If you want to shop around for a new steth, go to a store with different models and see if you can take a friend's kid with you (especially if they have some benign childhood murmur that the pediatrician/FP heard) or just listen to a friend or yourself. My only stethoscope snobbery extends to single vs. dual lumen. I truly believe that dual lumens offer better acoustics. Unfortunately, most pedi stethoscopes are single lumen. I've long been curious about the Magna Fortis pediatric stethoscopes (stethoscopes.com has the best prices)(stethoscopes.com has the best prices) that have a bell side and diaphragm (on a smaller head, obviously) and are dual lumen. But noone that I've known has owned one.

I love my Littman pedi scope (not the neo scope). It's fine for a general pediatrician in my opinion. It cost me about $60. I have a LCIII, but it is heavy and expensive. Frankly, I didn't even use it on my peds cards rotation.

J-Rad, what do you need a stethoscope for? I though you cards guys echoed eveybody -- at least all the ones I trained with did!

   The only thing that made me feel better about losing my LCIII was that I would "have to" buy a pedi one anyway. Yeah I heard just fine with it. Caught all the newborn murmurs, even grade I (sometimes more than my attending, who definitely needed a new steth 😛).

I love my Littman pedi stethoscope too, I've had it for 5+ years now. I did have to replace the earbuds (or whatever they're called) a couple years ago because they were cracked in several places and were starting to hurt my ears.

Echoing...haha, not the kind the cards fellows do:

I have a Littman Pedi Scope and like it. Much lighter/easier to carry than the LCIII and seems to be loud enough for everything I have needed in med school.

I used a Cardio III for many med school rotations and liked that, but was a bit heavy/bulky--doesn't fit in a white coat pocket particularly well, for example. However, for my purposes the sound was the best I've heard short of amplified steths (which I tried but seem like overkill for me).

I also tried a DRG cardiology scope once--not so good. Titanium was lightweight, tubing was dual lumen, but VERY stiff and not as loud to my ears as the Littman III. So it never got much use. Was a good conversation piece with the stethoscope snobs.

Does anyone know if there is any difference between the TYCOS HARVEY ELITE (regular) versus the TYCOS HARVEY ELITE PEDIATRIC VERSION?

- Is is better to get the regular one so I can switch the bell to pediatric version as I please. Or would I be able to do the same thing with the pediatric version vice versa?

Thank you.

Just realize that you will not be able to use your own stethoscope on at least half (if not more) of your patients. Infection control is necessary but damn, it slows down your mornings like anything.

Yeah, you're right. Might as well get used to using nuthin but a bright yellow disposable plastic scope.

Ah, I hate those things! Can't hear squat and they make my ears hurt. 😡 At least in the NICU each patient has their own proper Littman.

Littman pedi scope all the way! portable, can hear everything, and it's the perfect size-- not too small for your adult sized kids but not to mammoth for a neonate. love it.

personally I feel like I can hear a ton better with my LC-III than the Litman peds one I bought (because I thought I'd need it this year). However, I'm probably going to carry my LC3 for now.

The only time I figure that it'll be too big is NICU, and I figure all the kiddos will have their own little tiny stethascopes.

I've been using my Littmann Pedi scope for (all of) 2 days of residency now, and it's been quite nice. I like how it's smaller so it doesn't bang into as much stuff as my LCIII did. Also fits in the pocket better and doesn't try to escape my clutches.

The only problem was when I had to auscultate an 84kg adolescent with it. But oh well, you get what you need and you can very precisely get in those intercostal spaces, right...? haha
