I was just wondering, does a pediatric fellowship do anything for you? If you do it, do you move to a big city and exclusively do pediatric anesthesia, or do you do regular stuff too? Do you get paid better, have a better call schedule?

Jet, Military, UT, any of you guys know anything about this?

Peds Fellowship can either lead to a pediatric practice or just a means towards getting into a group which does "some" peds.

But it will get you comfortable with stuff that the average guy won't or cannot do......neonatal surgery, pedi hearts, etc.

It's what you make of it.

they dont do neonatal surgery or peds heart for that matter at a run of the mill hospital maybe 1 or 2 hospitlas per state do peds hearts.. if t hat many so peds wont help your job prospects

I really don't think so, Goose.
I know 2 pediatric anesthesiologists at the local childrens hospital and neither did a pediatric fellowship. They have had job openings more than once in the past few years and I have thought seriously about it because I did 6 months at the hospital during my residency and I'm familiar with their OR. Would be a cool place to work.
Anyway, my point is, they don't require a fellowship to work there. The staff thats been there a long time stick with you during cases that you are uncomfortable with (i.e. pedi hearts) until you are comfortable.
I've heard the "new hires" are comfortable with everything within 6 months or so.
I'm sure there are pediatric hospitals that do require a fellowship, but unless you've targeted one of those hospitals as a place where you absolutely have to work, I don't think the fellowship is worth it.
