As an undecided third year student, I find ophtho and peds most appealing to my interests.....

So not surprisingly, I'm curious about peds optho as a fellowship....I've been doing a little research about fellowships, etc, but still have questions.

what is the job market like for pediatric ophtho? what settings do you work in--outpatient centers, pediatric hospitals, a little of both? Is the compensation about on par with comprehensive ophtho? any other info?

I'm hoping to find people at my home program to talk to, but this board has such great advice i thought i'd try here first!

Thanks 🙂

It's my understanding that compensation is not fantastic as a peds ophtho doc - somewhere around general opthos or lower. This is partly due to less surgical procedures if you're going to be primarily peds. I think the job market is pretty good because the supply is low. You should be able to find a job in either academic or private settings. Fellowships are less competitive than other specialties in general.

I could be wrong on some of this - I'm sure about the fellowship stuff though. Much easier to get into than retina, plastics, even glaucoma and cornea. Nothing wrong with that, it's due to less applicants I think.

practice in texas you'll make more than retina. they get like 1200-2000 for a strab case b/c some ped oph guys in san antonio lobbied with medicaid explaining the detailed postop care required in strab. in cali for hawaii 400-700 a surgery. most areas of texas are in need also. large salary guarantees 200k not uncommon from hospital.
