I did a search through the Optho posts and only found 1 or 2 posts regarding the salary of pediatric ophthalmologists. Basically, one said that they make about 150,000-200,000. Dr. Doan only said they make "a little less" than general ophthalmologists. Can anyone give me a good estimate on how much they make? What is "a little less"? Is 150-200 accurate? I really want to do peds ophtho, and I just want an accurate picture of what I might make in the future. Thanks

$150-200K is accurate, but depends where you practice. I have good friends in Texas who make more than this in their practice. There is a high demand for peds because few residents are pursuing fellowship.

Average ophthalmologists are making $200-250K. Even ophthalmologists working for Kaiser in Southern California are starting at $180K/year. That's really good for a 8-5 job!

Good luck!

Texas peds guys also make a killing b/c strab surgery on medicaid patients there pays as much or more than a vitrectomy b/c a couple of ped ophtho guys went to austin and made it happen. Go to california and you get 1/3 of the amount for the same surgery.
