Hello Guys,

I am currently looking at either Peds or FM residency as my most likely matches. I would very much like to get into military medicine, but I am told that peds is being shut out. Is this correct? If so, are there any hopes of this changing? People in the military do have kids, after all........All of the services still list pediatricians on their websites as specialties they recruit, but, I spoke with a recruiter (Army) and he said it was not the case anymore. Does anyone have any info on this that they can share? Thanks in advance.

The Peds residencies still exist and there are still active duty pediatricians. They have stated they want to decrease manning and at least the navy has actually cut down the number of spots they elect for in the match. Where are you in training? You say you are looking to match family or Peds so are you thinking about joining after residency?

Dirk - IMG's aren't eligible for military residency or to commission as a physician until they hold an unrestricted license. When you've got an unrestricted license contact an AMEDD recruiter. With the transition to the Defense Health Agency no one knows the needs four years out. For the Army, FM has more assignments than Peds.

I was told that I could sign up for either active duty or reserves after I have Step 3 done or one year of residency, so I was hoping to sign up as soon as I am eligible to, most likely during residency.

Don’t know about the national gaurd or reserves but I’ve never known of anyone joining as an active duty physician without having completed residency so it’s not common. As long as you are a US grad I think the minimum is going to be that you have an unrestricted state license so that means at least intern year and (not or) step three and get an independent license.

please elaborate. a recruiter said they aren't recruiting for peds any more?

I spoke with a recruiter and he stated that they aren't recruiting any pediatricians at this time. The different branches medical corps are undergoing a transition and will all fall under a new agency called the Defense health agency......so, there is a bit of confusion as to what will be happening next. The Pentagon announced that they were going to eliminate around 17,000 healthcare positions, included amongst them, pediatricians, in an effort to concentrate more on war-fighting abilities. Congress flipped out and have put a temporary hold on this plan...........so at the moment......nobody really knows what is going to happen regarding certain medical specialties in the military, among them, pediatrics and ob-gyn. We will have a better idea, when the next annual plan comes out in October.
