Hey all --

So far we know whose going -- indigo23, The Fly, esco, TommyGunn04, UCLA2000, ChicagoDude, inanna, cbs7chuck, Bonds756

As such, I thought we could use this as a forum to discuss our plans on moving, when we're moving to Philly and perhaps to arrange a get-together in August (of course, before things get going).

Any ideas??

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone!!! :) :D :)

anyone get housing yet? If so, where are you living? As most of you probably know, I'm still hoping to go to Duke, so I haven't done anything with housing at Penn yet. But if I DO end up at Penn, I think I'd like to live at the Ambassador (2100 Chestnut) in Center City, or maybe at 2400 Chestnut.

Hey Tom--

I prolly already told you this but I am moving at the end of this month to 2400 -- what sold me was the cheap parking -- $79.00/mo and the fact that there's free laundry on each floor! Plus, there's a shuttle to Penn every morning, which will hopefully prove useful! Damn 8am classes! :D

Any updates on Duke ??

Nobody else out there?!? :)

I'm also going to Penn. I just signed a lease last week at a building on Walnut in center city. The Penn shuttle goes down to 20th street and botht the city bus and the Penn bus run along Chestnut and Walnut.

If anyone is interested in a beautiful one bedroom, I found out about a great one bedroom apartment in the Savoy in Rittenhouse square. It had a totally remodeled bathroom and kitchen (no one has used it yet) and is on the top floor. If anyone wants more information feel free to PM me and I'll give you the contact info.

This is maybe too personal, but can you guys that are going to Penn list your stats. I'm applying there and am curious.

Hi all,

I'm going to Philly on Tues (6/11) for a week to find a place to live, been thinking about 2400 Chestnut, but am open to suggestions.

Fly, obviously you're going to have a car...has anyone else decided whether or not to bring your wheels? I'm thinking I'll be bringing my car, but it'd be nice not to have a car payment to deal with, if it's possible to do without. Just don't know if I can handle the relative confinement.

Smid -- 3.51 undergrad (in Engl Lit); 3.89 post-bac (non-traditional student); 30 mcat (10s across the board); significant ec's...good luck to you.

Hey everyone. Good idea about this forum Fly.
I am living in an apartment on 20th and Spruce St (2 blocks south of Walnut). I am sharing the apartment with two Penn undergrad friends that are starting at other Philly med schools. I will probably walk to class in the morning and take the Penn shuttle back at night.
The places at 2100 and 2400 sound really good, so I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Hey, I just was selected from the Penn waitlist recently (yay for me) and my wife and I will be out in Philly this next weekend to look for housing. We're planning on moving out there around the beginning of August. Does anyone have any suggestions of where might be a good place to live? We'll have a car, so parking of some form would be nice. We're also still young and don't necessarily want to be cast as the "old married couple" living out in West Phily. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

The pervasive ideas for living are the Ambassador (2100 Chestnut) in Center City 2400 Chestnut (www.2400chestnut.com). See my above thread, but 2400 has cheap underground parking for residents (~ $79.00 / mo). Check out their website. . . it's nothing fancy, but it'll relay the important info. . .

I'd love to, but I don't know if I can get up even earlier to walk to class! :D

Your apt. promise to be filled with entertaining (and good humoured, of course) rivalries. . . seeing as they're going to those 'other' philly schools!! :)

It's nice to hear from everyone!!!!!!!! :)

Walking when the weather is still nice seems fine to me, but I definitely wanted to live by the bus routes and Penn routes so I had another option. I definitely have a tough time with early mornings but I guess I'll get used to the new schedule soon enough!

Hey Everyone,

I will be visiting Philadelphia from June 15-18 to nail down a lease before school starts. I am definitely planning to live in the Rittenhouse Square area of Center City and will be looking at one bedrooms. However, my first preference is to live with a roommate (or roommates). If any of you will be in town that weekend or are interested in finding a roommate, give me a heads up.

Does anyone know when we're supposed to sign/finalize/whatever our loan/financial aid stuff? There's something about it in that e-mail from Gaye. Since I'm still hoping to get into Duke off the waitlist, I'm not sure if I should hold off on that stuff, of if I'm supposed to do it anyway. Anyone know?

Hi Guys! I'll be one of your classmates next year as well. For those of you looking for housing, the Wharton site has an unbelievable housing guide http://dolphin.upenn.edu/~partners Just click on the "Housing Guide" link. It has everything, including descriptions of most of the buildings in West Philly and Center City and a spreadsheet that lays out all of their stats for comparison. They also have a "New to Philly" section that has some interesting stuff. I haven't found a place yet, but hopefully this will be all the info I need. Good luck to you all!

Can't wait to meet you!!! What's your timeline for arriving/moving in and so forth???. . . EXACTLY two months from this date, we're beginning!!! :)

well, I'm definitely going to Penn and I'm living in 2400 Chestnut in a 2BD with my wife who will be a law student either this fall or the next. It was about the best all-around value I could find out there over this past weekend and I figured there will be a lot of med students there. We are super excited to move out there from Colorado. The only question is, how do you move across the country most cost-efficiently? I'm excited to see you all in August!

I'm only moving from Boston to Philly, so it's not that expensive, but it's still a lot of $$ just to spend on moving expenses! :)

Keep it alive!

Fly... I'll probably be moving at the beginning of August. I'll be going up to Philly next week to look at places. I'm looking forward to meeting you too! I guess that we've got less than two months before we start now...

ChicagoDude...Are you Mike from the Penn Roommate list? I was considering writing you, but I'm not heading up to Philly until next week. I hope that you found something though!! :)

Does anyone know of apartments that will allow a dog? Does 2400Chestnut?

I haven't looked, because frankly, I assume not.
But I thought I'd ask.

Hey Everyone! I'm surprised that I didn't see this thread earlier. Anyways, I'm also living in 2400 Chestnut. I've already got my apartment picked out and set up and stuff. I'm moving in July 27th.

I look forward to meeting you all!

•••quote:•••Does anyone know of apartments that will allow a dog? ••••I'm in the same situation (2 dogs). I've been checking things out pretty extensively, so if you tell me what kind of dog you have I could give you some advice. You can pretty much plan on spending a lot of money if you want to live in Center City though (even if you get a roommate)...

Female mutt, medium sized (#50) and a cat. Hummmph. =-(

where do all the other pet lovers go?

I have no idea if 2400 allows dogs -- try their website:

2400's Web Site

Call them at the office tomorrow and see -- beware, the woman sounds curt over the phone; don't misinterpret that as something negative, she's just inherently apathetic. Seriously.

Also, try this link I found a while back that has links to a bunch of philly apartments in the area:

Relocation Central - Phila, PA

Things are getting exciting!! I'm sitting in my Boston apt. right now with tons of boxes all around. . . the few things not packed are my cable modem/wireless gateway, my bed and my U2 CDs/DVDs . . . :D

My last work day (yea!) is next thursday and my big moving day is Friday, June 28th. I'm spending the weekend in NYC and then heading down to move in on the second of July. . .

For those around at the end of July, I won't be there :( . . . I'm going home for a couple of weeks and then to a wedding in upstate NY, but I'll be in Philly for good after (I think) the 4th of August. . .

BTW, what's the deal with only 2 tix for the white coat ceremony?!? My parents are divorced! :)

I *Cannot* wait to meet everyone!!!!!! :)

great site, thanks fly. Now, I just have to come of the waitlist! Heh. It is Soooo hard to make arrangements to live near Dartmouth when I want to move to Philadelphia. 8^[

Hi guys! I just got back from spending a week in Philly solidifying my living arrangements. I ended up buying a place on Spruce between 10th and 11th. It's a little farther west than I would have liked, but my mortgage will be less than most of the rents I was looking at! I'm going to be moving in Aug 1st, so let's get together!!

I, too, am really, really excited!!!

My 89 & 91 year-old grandparents really want to come, which means I'll need 4 seats too. Gaye said it won't be a problem, just ask. You can either call Barbara Wagner or Natalie Marciano 215.898.7190 or email Barbara at [email protected].

Woo hoo.........

AND. . . CONGRATULATIONS on buying a place.

When you say "a little further west than [you] would have liked" do you mean east??

We should get together at the beginning of August. . . perhaps the second weekend (so as to give people time to get settled) ??? :)

••••Yeah, anything over 25lbs. is going to give you trouble (both of mine are also "real" dogs ;-). If you're looking for large buildings in Center City, you pretty much have your choice of The Riverlofts (studios start at ~$1400) or the Pennsylvania House (1bd start at ~1200). There's another building, but they don't have anything available. Hope this helps!!

As long as you knew what I was talking about/what I meant.

Have you guys ordered your white coats? I'm a little worried that I'm going to pick the wrong size, but I'm sure it won't be the end of the world if I have to change sizes.

small: 34-36
medium: 38-40
large: 42-44
x large: 46-48
xx large: 50-52

If you're particularly tall then i'd get whatever size in L, e.g. 44L. . . but I wouldn't know about these things because I am not what you would call excessively tall. . .

•Have you guys ordered your white coats? I'm a little worried that I'm going to pick the wrong size, but I'm sure it won't be the end of the world if I have to change sizes.•••••I was worried about that too! I finally walked into a tailor shop and had them measure my chest.

It's kinda complicated because a saleswoman in the uniform shop that I visited after being measured suggested that I go up a size because "I have broad shoulders". I tried on a few of the white coats, and although my chest is a 40, I cannot fit into a size 40 coat. I had to go up to a 42....

does anyone NOT have housing yet? I've been waiting on it, hoping to get into Duke off the waitlist, but it's getting very close to July now, and I'm thinking I should make sure I have someplace to live. Are there any 2-bedrooms left in the Ambassador or in 2400? Anyone looking for a roommate?

thanks for the white coat info--I stopped into a uniform store by me to try on coats, but I found out that there are a few different manufacturers with different cuts, styles, etc. I took my best guess and hopefully it will be good enough!

Don't worry too much about the white coat thing. No matter how close the fit is, they still feel like curtains draped on you - it'll never feel like a sport coat or anything. And anyway, if you're like me, you'll only wear the thing for a few rotations (avoid it for psych, peds, etc...) It won't stay nice and white either - trust me, it's not gonna look great for long no matter how hard you try.

Helllooo... Is anyone still around? Or has everybody taken a look at their tuition bills and died from shock?!?!

Hope that everyone enjoyed their 4th!
