I don't know anything about penn but as a general rule in the application process and while you are a student you would do well to be polite and kind to people you interact with. This is certainly a measure of "people skills." Most dentists are worried about the the profession as a whole looking good and being respected by the public at large. It also helps make your day to day world less stressful. Sucking up usually isn't necessary.
