i just got my acceptance letter yesterday and have decided on PSU. I'm hoping to do a little research there over the summer (since my home is in hershey anyways). if i have my sights set on cardiology or interventional radiology, does anybody know whose labs would be good to work for? siedlecki? cheung? or gus rosenberg's lab?

Hi, tiffchen, and Congrats!!! I was also looking for a lab, but it looks like you're casting a pretty broad and impressive net, based on your potential investigators. Dr. Rosenberg is probably the most famous at Hershey-- I'd be honored to work for him, but you might not get your hands as dirty/your own project as you might like, based on his work. Seems like you're an engineer and/or you've done research before, so to get the most for your time I'd choose a lab where I don't need to train but could use the techniques I already know. The 3 investigators you listed are quite different. I imagine Dr. Cheung does mostly in vitro/ex vivo work and a lot of time at the computer analyzing recordings. I spent a summer doing this elsewhere and most of my time was trouble-shooting the software. Dr. Siedlecki is way outta my field and seems more basic science oriented, but he seems well published, so maybe you could pull something off there if you're just working for 10 or so weeks. How about shooting an email to Dr. Eggli of radiology to see if she could help you out if you're interested in radiology? She is really enthusiastic and seems to have a great working relationship with the school of medicine and admissions. Maybe she could tell you which lab would be most likely to take on a pre-student/has the funding. Might be tough finding someone to pay you before work study could kick in. Good luck!

Welcome TiffChen and congrats!

Where in Hershey are you from? I'm from a bit further out in Central Dauphin country.

As far as research opportunities go, the best advice I've received (for pursuing work on my MSR anyway...), was to take the task head on. Email whoever has research you're interested in (listed on the hmc website), and request a meeting time. If you know anybody from Hershey from previously, start with them and they can ask some colleagues. I haven't had any success with email replies offering projects, but the first time I scheduled a meeting, I found a simple project for the summer. Though I'm guessing this method is pretty much across the board successful....just thought I'd share my experience.

See you next year!

hey kids... talked to the fin aid office today... I haven't gotten my award letter yet but they said it was already sent out (dated April 13th) so letters should be on their way at least for some...

anyone get their award letter today? i'm tempted to drive home to check my mail and totally will if the letters are arriving.

havent gotten mine, but i am alittle farther away

thanks all for the advice... Avianburner, I'm from Hershey proper... went to Hershey High/Middle/Elementary. anyways, just to double-check: for financial aid, all we had to do was fill out the FAFSA and fill out that form that was in the acceptance packet, right?

Not me but hopefully I will be able to be going to psu from the southwest.

Hello. I've been accepted to Penn State and I just wanted to say I can't wait to be back in Hersey and smell the chocolate in the air. I love rides and I'm looking foward to trying out the park too.

yup....loans loans and some more loans total of $57,862

In-state, also loans, loans, and loans to about $45,000.

same here. no grants. 🙁

guess this isn't like college, though.

All loans folks. Really quite disappointed, and I'm out of state too.

I only received $57,862 in loans. Where are the scholarships/grants? 😕

from last year's thread, (from what i remember) there wasn't a whole lot of money given out, most of it was loans. i'm not expecting anything but loans...

I also received 57,800 in loans.... only 7750 is set aside for living expenses per year. What do med students do when that will hardly cover rent alone? Is it possible to take out higher alternative loans? 😕

find a cheaper place to live (i have been thinking about this) and eat ramen everyday?
I think you may be able to take more alternative loans, though i'm not sure of the details

Hi,

I'm in a unique situation which will leave me borrowing probably 100% of the costs + extra. There are a few loan programs that don't count against your student budget which allow to borrow a little extra.

A lot of people buy fewer books than allotted on the budget, and some manage to find cheaper health insurance (either through a spouse or some super-cheap plan). I figure I could eek out an extra 2k/year if I'm conservative about the books and find an alternative for the insurance. It's tough to spend less on rent than they budget for, though... unless you want to live in a commune. 🙂

And I think I will relive my undergrad years... hooray for Ramen.

Has anyone out there NOT received your award letter yet? I'm still waiting... weird. I wonder if they're going in order of acceptances... alphabetically... or random?

i have not received my award letter yet. i called the office this morning and they said they would be downloading another batch of letters on Wednesday, so i think another round will come out sometime next week?

i also think the room & board allotted for PSU is based on the two bedroom dorms. from what i've heard, they will increase your budget if your living expenses are more than what they allot (sp?).

the only thing that worries me about getting private loans is finding a co-signer. at the moment, i'm not sure if my pops wud qualify. are there any loan programs out there that don't require a co-signer? 😕

Anyone hear from the housing office about on-campus housing? I am not sure if I want to live on or off campus. I really don't want to have to move out of an on campus apartment due to renovations.

Hey guys-
I'm number crunching my financial aid package and am now wondering if you want to start a commune of, say, 2 or 3 people off campus but close.

Perks:
1. I've been furnishing my apartment for 4 years, so you wouldn't need to contribute much, other than your own bedroom furnishings. But with that said, I'm sure I'd dig your furnishings, too. Especially a plasma screen tv. 😀
2. A dishwasher is a must, so no dish hands, and well, I'm totally ok with neglecting chores, especially around test time. So, if you're a neat freak, maybe we're not meant to be. But, if we're buddies, I might even help you with your laundry and make you lemon squares.
3. I'm pretty darn liberal, if that's ok with you. I don't care what you are.
4. Bring your cat. Mine needs more friends.
5. I have a car.
6. I like to cook/bake. 😀
7. I'm a non-smoker and despise drugs, but I'll have a beer with you over Family Guy.
8. Oh, I'm a girl. I don't care if you're a guy or girl.

PM me.

Does anyone know how much cable/internet will cost for off campus housing?

well, if you want cable internet it will probably cost you around $60 a month.

A couple of students have had to do that this year, and they definitely weren't happy about it, but I didn't hear as much complaining as I thought I would since the new apartments are pretty nice apparently.

A few have said the construction can be pretty annoying, but they just go to the hospital to study when they have to....

Hey guys, I just wanted to know what type of ranking that Penn State has in the general scheme of things? I know that they don't supply their info to US News and I just want to know that I'm making the right choice.
Thanks!

Careful, you'll get gobbled up for implying that ranking is a factor in your decision-making process. To me, MCAT and GPA (US News primary criteria) are irrelevant because it is nice that Penn State's net is cast so wide as to consider the individual's experiences/ uniqueness rather than numbers (the mean mcat is just shy of 30). That aside, I think the best "ranking" system is to decide if you like the curriculum, atmosphere, costs, and what alumnae are up to (ref: the previous years' match lists, alumnae bulletin, etc.). Personally, these factors made me very comfortable turning down schools that did rank in the top 50 on US News (for research.)

If you are potentially going to do my laundry (help out) this could be the beginning of a beautiful relationship...

Wow. Ladies and Gentlemen, I am proud to introduce our new class president: Hardy.

I will join in on the movie fun at Hardy's. I also have a fair amount of dvd's. Hopefully I can get my hands on a flatscreen or flat panel t.v.

How far is Penn State college from Hershey? Maybe we can take a trip to see a football or lacrosse game. 🙂

100 miles, 2 hours.

If still talking about sports, how big is everyone in using the University Fitness Center? I saw this link http://www.hmc.psu.edu/ufc/facilities/gym/schedule.pdf but is there a large enough attentance at those times to find a pick up game every week? Also do any of the students play in any intramural sports? I saw earlier that it was mentioned that there are a bunch of lacrosse clubs near by and I'd like to get into that as well. If not thats fine I can understand how staying in and watching a flat screen in HD can be just as exciting if not more.

trips for games would be fun. it'll be nice to catch some lax on TV at times other than 4 AM when they run it on the west coast (assuming they do play it on tv out there)!

if any of you all like scrubs, i have the first two seasons on dvd... 🙂

Unfortunately, no lax on the comcast cable around here. There's a couple games a week on ESPNU if you have digital cable though. Lacrosse is getting much bigger in central PA, but we're still out of the loop.

I'd love to head up to PSU for a lacrosse game. I know they have a fall tournament yearly, but I"m not sure if they generally schedule that during a home or away football game. Either way, I'll probably drive up for most of the home football games (depending on how much crazier second year is).

I'm not a big basketball guy, but I'm pretty sure there are enough people for pickup every day after classes/work. 4 years of medical students, countless residents, 2 years of nursing students, phd students, not to mention all the workers.
