Does anyone know anything about the Ob/Gyn program at Penn State? They have had to scramble to fill the past several years and I'm wondering why.

Thanks!

I know this program well. The main reason for their non-filling is due to the location. The PD and chair both told me that in the past, after the match, they have called applicants that matched elsewhere and asked them what they thought about HMC. They said the usual answer from the applicants was that HMC was ranked high but that the location was a big negative and this caused the applicant to move HMC further down the list.

In my opinion they are a solid mid-tier University program with good representation of all sub-specialties, the only exception is they do not have any fellowship trained urogyns but a couple of the generalists have focused on mostly doing urogyn cases. The strength is definately with gyn surgery over OB, the OB volume is low at Hershey but this is made up by spending time at Harrisburg hospital so you get some "urban" experience.

I'd be glad to help you with any specific questions.

generally, how competitive is the program?.....thanks

I think there are 3 in pgy 1-3, there is 1 or 2 more in the chief class, but they'll be gone next year.
