just curious to see what other male applicants wore for the first day of the Penn State interview, which is supposed to be the "informal day". Would dress shirt and slacks suffice or dress shirt, slacks and tie??

I wore dress shirt, slacks, and tie. You could probably get away with not wearing the tie, but why not just throw it on, eh?
