Penn State Wait list
Started by kdogg- 00
annh31 said:Ok these numbers are really discouraging. But let's think about it - how many people do you think are rejected post-interview? Maybe 100? I mean, they can't waitlist everyone they don't accept.
So, that takes us down to roughly 770. Yesssss.
Do you really think they over-accept that much? I was thinking (ok, more like hoping) they only accepted like 250 people the first time through. So, say only 1/3 of those people decide to go to Penn State, since it is a state school and all that jazz.
That still leaves a TON of people on the waiting list...but hopefully a large number of the people on this list have A. selected another school at this point and have B. withdrawn from the waitlist all together.
Someone please tell me there aren't 300 people on this list.
on the up side, if 15 -20 % of the entering class actually comes from the waiting list, that's 18 -25 students. Since not everyone accepts an admission off the waiting list, you figure that they must let in 2 x that number. That would mean they let in 36 - 50 students from the waitlist. Out of a three hundred, that could mean that up to 17 % of the waitlisted students are accepted. maybe it's not as bad as we think. Or maybe I have wishful thinking.
hey that sounds better. and we can always hope that this year there was a high number of people who declined their acceptances and they need to fill more spots. but yeah, whatever happens happens. i think i need to remove myself from SDN for awhile.
haha yeah right.
haha yeah right.
I can't manage to kick the habit but I've cut it down to once a day... 🙄annh31 said:i think i need to remove myself from SDN for awhile.

any news anybody?
Alright, a slight update. I hollered at Lubbers today (FYI, that means I called him) regarding the fact that Im going to be incommunicado for 3 weeks.
While doing so I of course asked how many peeps on de waitlist. He said he didnt know (thats a crock). I asked how much movement was there last year? He said theres usually at least 10%. 10% is **** in terms of waitlist movement. I then asked when does the majority of the movement occur. He said mid-June to mid-July so theres still a lot of time.
Dont be all gettin yer panties in a bundle now.

Has anyone gotten off of this ***tty waitlist? I just got into Temple off the waitlist today but man did I wish that e-mail was from Penn State instead!!
July is super late to be letting people off of a waitlist! On the bright side, maybe most of the people Penn State lets in in July will already be set on attending another school and they'll keep going down the list until they get to us diehards and finally let us in!! Let's hope 🙂
Good luck everyone. Remember there are some people on the waitlist at Penn State who will get accepted to other schools and remove themselves from the waitlist. Looking at mdapplicants there are a lot of people accepted to Penn State with multiple acceptances. I think that should be encouraging.

Likewise, I know of some people who withdrew from the waitlist recently after getting in to other schools. I still wonder why they start looking at the waitlist in June - that seems late.
Anyone else get kind of nervous when this thread gets bumped up to the front? Haha, I know, I know.
Man I hope we all get in.

hey congrats kdogg...i just had a question. if you take the spot at temple (like, you get in somewhere off a waitlist in general) - can you still be on other waitlists? i always wondered how this worked.
and this goes out to anyone - is it true that the waitlist school will call other schools where you've been accepted to verify you are holding a spot, or are on a waitlist, etc? someone told me that but i dunno if i believe it.

I think you can always stay on as many waitlists as you want. I was accepted to Temple yesterday and they are giving me a week to let them know whether or not I will go there. I have to accept within a week, or else my spot will be given to someone else. I can accept at Temple, but stay on the waitlist at Penn State. Penn State is still my first choice, so I am holding out for a spot in their class - regardless of whether or not I accept at Temple. Hope this helps.
I don't know if schools admissions offices talk to each other about individual applicants. THey might talk to each other occassionally, but I highly doubt that it is common practice. They're too busy to bother figuring out which students are holding places at which schools, etc. That's my guess.
This is the deal...when a school rejects, accepts, or W/L they let AMCAS know...then schools to which you applied can go onto some website and check out what school you are currently accepted or W/L. I got into Penn State but waitlisted at Temple...then I got into Temple and Penn State emailed me regarding multiple acceptances (they found out from AMCAS). I eventually withdrew my acceptance from Temple since Penn State was my first choice. Good Luck All! I firmly believe that everything will work out!!!!
well some news: I called today morning just to check up on the status of the waitlist and I was told there HAS been some movement of the waitlist but that it'll continue til the semester begins...I'm guessing this means the first batch of letters has been sent out (or phone calls made?) so I'm getting worried
I'm trying to be optimistic now that it's a letter that hasn't quite reached but know that I should be realistic that waitlist movement could have occurred..just not for me 🙁

yeah, i've heard similar things. i can't believe no one on SDN heard from them (well, unless he/she isn't saying anything.) let's hope that they only sent like 3 letters, haha.

p.s. - who did you talk to? the secretary? just wondering. 🙂
I talked to Lubbers the other day and he said nothing was goin on. Whatever.
OMG I got in!! Phone call today from Lubbers (10am), tried my cell which I forgot to turn on and then my home phone. Talked to both him and Dr.Davis and now that I look back, I probably sounded like a complete ***** 😳
But in case you were wondering: My interview was on Jan 28th, waitlist letter in March, sent in a letter of interest before May 15th, and another letter/update in late May, called couple of times (but only talked to secretary, once to Mark Lubbers), had 31 MCAT and ~3.8 GPA, out-of stater and August MCAT scores...
I'm so excited that I'm babbling so I'll stop now.
to all of you guys!!

i'm in too baby!!! lubbers and dean davis conference called me today at like 10am to tell me i'm in. i had a 3.58gpa and 28 mcat, which illustrates that PSU actually does care about peripheral stuff (state residency, dedication to primary care, interest interest INTEREST). as a borderline applicant, my only suggestion with this waitlist is to keep hounding them and let them know they are #1 on your list. movement just started this week so there's still eons of time left. good luck! 🙂
yay!!!!!!!! i got off too. seems like they called us all around 10am eastern time. im soooo happy. congrats to everyone that got off too, and good luck to those on the list. i guess it just started this week, so theres still a lot of time left. i know people at penn state that got off literally a couple days before school started! just incase youre wondering too... im an out-of-stater too, 3.7 gpa, 27 mcat (bombed verbal... 10-bio 10-physical 7-verbal). but have a lot of extracurriculars and stuff, so they definitely look at that!
LionKing said:Congrats you guys, welcome to our class- Just paid my $610 housing deposit today.... Welcome to HERSHEY!
Hey Lion King,
I'm actually still holding out on the waitlist, but I remembered reading on the other PSU thread that there would be some problems with housing. Are you still going to live on-campus then? Also, when exactly does orientation begin for PSU?

How did you hound them? I am super sad that I didn't get a message today. How can I get myself in? I am a Penn resident, 28 mcat, 3.77 gpa and lots of experience and lots of interest in Penn state. Congrats to you all who made it - I am soooooo jealous!!!
Congrats All...Welcome Class of 2009! For those of you that just got in...I will give an update regarding what has been going on with PSU. There were financial aid issues (mostly if you are an out of stater so if you are take a look at the details of the package when you get it) most everything is fixed now. Currently there is little on campus housing (only four bedroom shared units) so I would look for off-campus housing stat. Financial aid is givng an additional $60 a month to those that decide to live off campus. I can send you a list of off campus housing if you are interested (PM me). Havent really missed much...Congrats Again!!

I am living on campus, but from I understand, very few other people have been offered places to stay... on top of that I still haven't received a financial aid package. According to Dean Davis at second look day, orientation begins August 8th (Still haven't received anything on that yet either). Good luck for all those still waiting.

Congratulations everyone. Welcome to Hershey.
For those of you who are in need...Below is a list of the off-campus housing...

Congratulations to those of you who just got in! And, welcome to our class! 👍
As others have said, housing seems to be the main issue right now. Good luck looking for off-campus places!
I wasn't able to get a room on-campus, but I found a nice apartment off-campus. I'll sign the lease and pay the deposit this week! 🙂

kdogg- 00 said:How did you hound them? I am super sad that I didn't get a message today. How can I get myself in? I am a Penn resident, 28 mcat, 3.77 gpa and lots of experience and lots of interest in Penn state. Congrats to you all who made it - I am soooooo jealous!!!
hey kdogg,
i didnt hound them at all. not one phone call. actually, after my interview, i called like every week after the 6th week past, and it took them about 2 and a half months to finally put me on hold! but yeah, so i would call a lot, and they seemed like they really didnt like it (especially with that "dont call us" bit in the hold letter itself). so, after that, i had a professor write me another letter of rec. then i sent a letter of interest before may 15th, and one on the 18th of may, saying that i know things are now moving, and i still want them to know im very interested. plus, i put down two new activities (actually one that i told them about already, but just restated it again) and what i learned from each (to make them sound important)... kinda tied them with specific programs they offer, like patient project and stuff. anyway, so besides that, i didnt call, and surprisingly was taken off the waitlist, which i really didnt think would happen at all. if u want, pm me, and i can maybe think of stuff u could write them or something... or tell u specifics. i dunno. i hope u get in!
Hey guys,
OK, I sent Penn an email and via snail mail of my withdrawal. Hope one of you people will get my spot!
And about schools talking, yes, my advisor said that if a school sees another school accepted you, but they want to make an offer...sometimes they will call that school to let them know that they also intend to accept students out of courtesy.
And yes, they can check where you're accepted--Penn did, and also sent me that email that I'm holding multiple spots.
You can hold on to all waitlists up to until you matriculate at a school--orientation week is considered entrance, so after that, you can no longer go to another school.

A big thank you to all of you SDNers that helped me! I got into Penn State!! I can't believe it! Lubbers and Dean Davis called me this past Wednesday (June 22) around 3. They called me at work and told me I got in! I accepted, so Penn state is my final destination. A word of advice to any of you who are die hard Penn state fans: let them know. You don't need to hassle them, but a few kind e-mail updates, letters, or extra recs should help. Here is my info for anyone who is interested: Mcat: 28R, GPA:3.77, lots of healthcare experience, in state resident. I sent Penn a LOI after my interview in November and was then placed on the hold list shortly thereafter. I later sent another, longer e-mail letting them know I was still interested (this was in April) I later sent another short e-mail, another long e-mail, and had a rec. sent in from my current boss. Summary: sent 1 letter, a few e-mails, and one additional rec. Good luck to anyone who is still waiting to hear. I really hope it works out for you!!
anyone still looking for a place to live?
if so pm me or post on here, i have a 2br in briarcrest with reasonable rent, let me know.
again congratulations!

has anyone heard anything from penn state??? i wonder if their class is full . . .
What is the deal....I am still unclear about Penn State. What is going on? I get a letter that says they just finished reviewing my application and have put in for further review. This is BEFORE any interview. Where do i stand with Penn State at this point?

I got my acceptance letter today. First one, so I'm pretty excited.
Congrats! Maybe I'll see you there next year.

Maybe...I'm still waiting to hear from a couple of schools, and one of them costs half what Penn State does. But Penn State was my favorite interview. I'll definitely be at 2nd look. You going?

Yeah I'll be at 2nd look. I'm a PA resident so PSU would only cost me an arm and half a leg. Unfortunately, that's also the cheapest school out of the several to which I've been accepted.
Also, something to keep in mind is that the cost of living in Hershey is probably going to be much lower than a lot of other schools, particularly ones in large cities. So that may help defray the costs.
Mdgator,
Most happy for you. When did you interview there? I was there mid-Feb. Just wondering what the timeline is.
Thank
I interviewed on Feb. 20. At the interview, they told me it would take anywhere from 5 to 8 weeks for me to hear back. I think it took 5 weeks and 1 day. I wasn't really expecting to hear anything for another week or two at least.
Good luck!
I interviewed in December and also was put on hold afterward. I dont know if post interview hold = waitlist or not. I thought the letter suggested that you could be accepted from then until the class if full and then it turns into a waitlist.
