Hi,

I could only find threads from a couple years back or longer. I know that both schools are amazing, but obviously one trip to both schools don't give me a great idea of what each is like.

Does anyone have any opinions on what makes Penn and Tufts unique, respectively? This is such a dilemma for me!!

Thanks!

they're more or less the same cost wise, so i'd go with Penn. You have a better chance of specializing that way.

Clinically however, Tufts might be better...so it all depends on what you wanna do.

👍👍 Penn all the way!!! Same cost so ivy versus non ivy school that is easier to get into. Ivy!!! Congrats!

What do you mean by clinically, Tufts is easier? I hear specialization rates are not as important as the efforts you put in yourself. Cost is pretty similar, as there will be a $31,000 difference once all four years are up, due to the merit scholarship at Tufts (assuming I get it all four years). Is that a big difference? I also have a s.o. in Boston, which is one concern. But Penn does have a great name!

Both schools will offer you great clinical experiences, didactic education, extern opportunities, good local name, etc

I would consider which city want to live in (Boston is expensive). what class size do you want? (Penn 120). Tufts is larger isn't it? Are nice facilities important to you?

The one thing that I absolutely hated about TUFTS was that in clinic (your 3rd and 4th year), students assisted professors in helping other students. Yeah ok, those students probably know their stuff pretty well to be able to do that. But it seemed to me that they are enrolling as many students as they can without having enough faculty to fully support it. I don't know how much truth there is to that statement, but it was just a feeling I got during the tour. Also Tufts has about 190 student class size, Penn is 120.

Tufts does have a great view though..and the vertical expansion was pretty nice.

I was interviewed by a student, and I think she mentioned that the teaching assistants only help with the pre-clinic part. Maybe a current student can help clear this up? 🙂

Thanks for all the replied so far! I do want to specialize, but of course isn't that dependent on how hard you work in dental school?

Can anyone tell me if $33,000 at the end of four years is a lot?

Of course my decision won't be made based on just this, but every comment really helps a lot and gives me something else to consider!

I would choose penn! It's basically same price and you get such a good name and Philly is awesome!!!

I had the same choice between Tufts and Penn back in 2010 and I chose Penn. So far it's been a great choice. Either way you'll probably be happy. It's a win-win situation for you.

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'm going to put my deposit down at Tufts, for various reasons. It is a similar price, but Tufts still is slightly cheaper for me, especially since I did get a scholarship. And I'm very comfortable with Boston!

Penn does have that nice Ivy name, but browsing through a ton of threads, a lot of pre-dental students seem to be gunning for that name while dental students keep saying that name doesn't matter.

Thanks for all the advice! 🙂

That's what I thought before dental school/before sitting in on all these post-match panels for all the specialties. Definitely a debatable statement. But, if your goal is to do general dentistry, the name won't matter that often.

Best of luck at Tufts.
