Upenn vs Duke vs Mayo AZ.
NOTE. Waitlisted at Duke and Mayo, but I want to be ready to make the decision should it open up, as they don't let you wait around to decide.
Note: All have P/F Pre Clinical, assuming no aid outside of loans. Have no clue what I want in the future so I want to keep as many doors open as possible.
Upenn:
Pros:
-Insane Match list
-access to a bevy of resources on the Upenn Campus
-18 month pre-clinical (sweet spot in between 12 and 24 months).
-Philly is an awesome city in which I will be able to live within walking distance of campus
-Absolutely amazing hospital system on Campus
-Prestige for what it is worth/ranking. Another debate for another day, but Upenn is Upenn.
Cons:
-Furthest possible place I could be from home
-Not necessarily a big city person
Duke:
Pros:
-1 year pre-clinical (seems to be the way to go with step 1 p/f)
-Durham has much more of a small-town feel, much more my style
-Basketball baby!
-research during year 3 that will really help with residency app
-lower cost of living
Cons:
-1 year pre-clinical (heard this can be hell despite its usefulness)
-HUMID and HOT, I have a very hard time with humidity and heat in general
-Durham may not have as much to do as a big city like Philly
Mayo AZ:
Pros:
-small class size
-Arizona is much closer to home
-also an amazing hospital system
-Scottsdale and surrounding area is a wonderful place to live
-CLose to bevy of outdoor activities especially if you are willing to drive a bit ( hiking, skiing, etc) which I grew up with
-Amazing access to world-class faculty with such a small class size
Cons:
-can feel isolated with so few people in class
-a lot of driving around rotating at hospitals and clinics
-balls hot year round
-dress code (despite only really being a thing when seeing patients)
