Hi SDN community! This is my first time posting. I am having trouble deciding which school to attend. I would like to pursue general dentistry.

PENN
Pros: $30,000 scholarship
Small class size
Latest technology
Outreach
Cons: Away from home
Known for specializing

NYU
Pros: Live at home and save money (30min commute)
My support system is here
Will be receiving a scholarship
Variety of cases in NYC
Outreach
Cons: Large class size

Rutgers
Pros: Variety of cases
Higher graduating requirements
Cons: would have to live in Newark
Ends up being similar in price to NYU and Penn because I am OOS
Old bench labs

NYU

You just trying to become a general dentist

Get your C's in lectures, and ask questions in clinic.

doesn't matter where you go, but do it an economical fashion.

Did you start working or is working in the field already?

That is the most important thing to know.

If you are for sure about general dentistry you should compare the price difference after accounting for in-state for 3 years at rutgers vs Penn. If it's within 50kish do what you want. More than that you should go to Rutgers. NYU for general dentistry without a firm understanding of how much scholarship doesn't make sense.

Definitely Penn with a 30k/year scholarship. It's a 1 hour and 20 minute train ride to NYC if you ever want to go back and visit. You'll still be super close.

Thank you! I see that you attend Penn, do you feel like there is enough clinical experience there given that Temple is nearby? Also, since it is known for specializing, are there students looking to go into general that feel like they are getting enough experience?

Well I'm not yet in clinic so I don't know what it's really like in terms of the patient pool, but Philly is a big city and Penn and Temple are in 2 different areas of the city (West Philly and North Philly), so I'm pretty sure there's enough patients to go around.

As for clinical experience, the new dean is definitely pushing to make Penn grads stronger clinically. He's starting more out reach programs and expanding the patient pool. Also, I think he's going to make our clinical requirements higher.

Interesting. People barely were able to complete the original requirements.
I guess it depends because there are some D4s that finished their requirements like a month ago. The new dean is definitely trying to expanding the patient pool by bringing in a lot of veterans and establishing out reach programs in Philly. We'll see how it all works out though.

do u have a cost break down for each?

I'd lean more towards Rutgers to be honest. Close to home but you get your independence. Huge population .

Yes. It really does depend. I was 75% done reqs by the end of 3rd year. But an anecdote here and there means nothing. I got lucky with pts and my group. A lot of people did struggle towards the end to reach the reqs. Maybe they will get rid of the archaic point system entirely.
