Since Penn (not UPenn) does interviews by graduate departments and stuff...is it bad if you reschedule? Obviously I can't not reschedule but I was just wondering.

Thanks!

I've heard that if Skip Brass hears you refer to the school as "UPenn," he automatically rejects you 😛.

More to the point, it seems that whether it's helpful or hurtful to reschedule (or, as I suspect, neither provided you can offer a good rationale for doing so), you say that you don't have a choice...so why worry about it? (Even though, as a fellow uber-neurotic applicant, I already know the answer to that question :-D). They've been doing this for many years now, and I'll bet they've dealt with most everything scenario-wise, so I'm sure they'll be as accomodating as possible. Worry not...you'll get in, I'm sure of it!

Can you explain this? Are there specific departments that interview and specific weekends?

When applying, I believe I specified Cell and Molecular Biology as the graduate program that most closely aligned with or resembled my research interests. I believe that the date I was invited for (Nov. 15 - 16) has all the Cell and Molecular Bio people....someone (Neuronix) correct me if I'm wrong.

Is this something that's advertised? I wonder what they will do with me. Neronix-what do they do with the history of science applicants?

History of Science (as we call it, HSSC--history and sociology of science) is in SAS, not the med school technically...and I don't think it's a part of one of the regular graduate groups. You may have to coordinate your interview with SAS as well.

Incidentally, I (and most others) have chosen CAMB...it's by far the biggest graduate group at the school, with I think BMB being second.

I will definitely have to interview with the HSSC. I actually have to submit a seperate application to the grad dept. Do you think I should call and ask how they deal with this or just wait to see if I get an interview? Also, is Penn a rolliing admissions school? I forget.

Penn is not rolling...and I'm not surprised about having to submit a separate app because it's in a different school (Penn loves to throw up bureaucratic roadblocks wherever it can :-D). I think you should probably call or send an e-mail so you know what to do in the event that you do get an interview so you can possibly interview at the same time (?)...I'm not entirely sure how the inter-school application process works.

It's good because if you use UPenn they know you know you're not at Penn State. (Just kidding, everyone here does call it Penn)

Yes. They bring the applicants in by their proposed grad group. One or two days are very specific to that group. It's really to try to make sure you meet with those people and get a good selling on our program. I don't have the schedule yet myself. If you can't make one or either, they are flexible.

Neronix-what do they do with the history of science applicants?

Don't remember. For the rarer interviews, I can't remember if they bring you on miscellanous day or just put you wherever. I think I've seen both, but I dunno what they're doing this year.

For HSSC they don't even do grad school selection until January. You could e-mail the office and ask if there's anything else they need from you. I know someone who applied HSSC, but I asked her and she's not even sure so just ask the office. It's kind of a rare thing. Just look up Maggie Krall's e-mail and send her your questions. Penn is NOT rolling. All decisions are released... ahhh jeez what was it... Second week of March I think it is?

Yeah don't sweat too much which group you pick. You're not really chosen based on that (there's no quotas) and you can always switch. CAMB will probably have 2 days and a 3rd rollover day there tends to be so many interviewing for it. One thing I would say is I am in BMB and it's definately not the second largest 🙂 It's one of the smallest in BGS (Biomedical Graduate Studies). Not sure what the second largest is... Neuro and Immuno are pretty big.

The thing with the interview dates is, when they give your the date they want you to stick with it. If too many people switch they get really backloaded with those people and all the late applicants. They'd much prefer you to get in early if you can.

Let me know if you have more questions. I don't know if I've been that useful, but I'll do what I can 😉

Tremendously useful! That's good they have more than one date for CAMB since that's likely the program/division/department I'd be most interested in.

Thanks!

Heh I guess I thought BMB was larger than it was since all of the grad students in my lab are in it 🙂.

Attribution bias! I can still remember that lecture... You must be in a BMB lab. I can say that it is a great grad grad to be in. If you come interview I will tell you all my honest opinions on everything, either there or post-interview.

In any case, I want to emphasis that there's no ONE SET DATE for any grad group. Even if you're in one of the small groups that has one date, they can still bring you on a different day. It's not going to affect your chances and I don't even think it's a real big deal. You won't get the same song and dance from the grad group is about the only thing you'll miss.

The office just wants you to come in on the day they assign you because again, if too many people switch it becomes really bad towards the end. We had some HUGE interview groups last year, the biggest one being the last, and I don't think anyone wants that again. We did add an interview date this year, which should help I hope. As someone who coordinates a lot of the admissions events, having to look after 25-30 applicants is 😕😕😕

Yay! Penn has me rescheduled for Dec. 13th! Unfortunately, that's in the middle of finals....so I guess I need to go plead with my profs about moving my exam(s).

is there more than one interview date for neuro, and is there a penalty if you reschedule? i have a conflict 🙁

Look two posts up from your question.

Does anyone have the statistics of the interviewed/accepted ratio for Penn?

I know its a large program, and that many were given interviews. Im trying to gauge whether or not to get my hopes up

wait...so why is it that we cant call them UPenn? 😕

ohhhhh

wow, iv been saying UPenn all along, and so has my professors...

thanks for the heads up...good thing i found out before my interview...
