Penn

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did anyone else drool while they were there?
...and subsequently dream about it in your sleep?

I <3 Penn!

😍😍😍😍

Oh, dear God, I totally have a heart-on for Penn. It just kills me that they're not necessarily a super match for my research interests. They're OK, but definitely do not compare with the ID epi powerhouses...🙁

I <3 Penn.

But the question is, does Penn <3 me?

hmmm... anyone else who applied neuro at penn get the note from the neuroscience director today?

is it your first choice, jweezy?

after visiting, it became my first choice. i dont want to get my hopes up too much, though. the other applicants i met there were so overwhelmingly qualified. if i end up at my second choice, id be really happy, but here's to hoping for penn!

hahahahahaha

zomg - I jumped just like the panda!

zomg, that panda had a heart attack!

Ok, I've kept quiet for a long time, but I have to admit that I too 😍 Penn. Seems like there may end up being a large SDN cohort there as well.

Welcome to the cult! I mean, club! 😉

so no email from penn like last year's thread?

I'm *dead* at that. It made my morning.

Did any of you send a letter of intent to Penn, like they've been fishing for??

no, just a strong letter of interest. as far as i can tell they are my first choice, but i'm commitmentphobic. (just about schools 🙂 )

I'd have never guessed you were commitmentphobic....

stanford ain't too shabby however

hahahahaa

you know a trait is obvious if people who've never met you before figured it out from a message board ;-) nothin' but love j-weezy...

yeah, i like stanford a lot, without them i wouldn't have hesitated to commit to penn

yeah, i was just going off of the "idecisive/commitmentphobic" thread that you started... 😀

BUT - if i had stanford, life would be much more complicated - good luck with the difficult decisions you're bound to have :luck:

yes, i sent a letter of intent. i just got the right feeling when i visited. we will see how it turns out. my only misgiving was that i would have to leave new york, which wasnt a problem until i was actually accepted at a ny school. still, philly is close enough and big enough, and definitely awesome enough to be my first choice. I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHERE IM GOING!

so people have sent in letters but no email from skip or gary recently?

At the admissions meetings some of the first years were complaining about all the semi-cryptic e-mails they got from the program last year. The administrators are very aware that their decisions come pretty late and don't want to lose students for that reason. The current students I heard think it's really not an issue.

So, I wouldn't be surprised if they won't do that again.

It did to me. I got this email on 3/7. It includes updates about their admission, where they are in the decision-making process, and a paragraph that says this:

"At this point you have visited a number of programs and may have started to receive offers of admission. You are almost certainly forming opinions about where you would like to be next year, even as you wait to hear from all of the programs that have not yet made offers. If you have questions about Penn’s program that have come up since your visit, I would be happy to try to answer them as fully as I can. Similarly, you are welcome to share your thoughts about attending Penn with me. Many of you have done that already. It is entirely up to you."

I guess that's the same thing as last year's.

Oh boy... Before anyone asks...

I DON'T KNOW WHY SOME OF YOU GOT IT AND SOME OF YOU DIDN'T!!! I AM NOT INVOLVED IN ADMISSIONS DECISIONS.

*running and hiding from flood of PMs*

Do you ever get tired of the same threads year after year after year? It was funny doing a search for "penn" - you get almost identical threads each year...lolz, we're so unoriginal

haha, thanks for being so patient with us Neuronix

Matilda--that was from skip?

everytime i see your name i get that song in my head forever

i just want to KNOW already. at least yale will tell us thursday. but penn gets -5 points for all this.

Yale tells us Thursday? zomg, what insider-trading information did you get?

We're pre-meds...we have a long established history of doing the same thing year after year after year. We never get wiser, just more neurotic and OCD.

Yes it was from Skip. The bad thing is, I didn't know how to reply, because Penn is NOT my first choice. So I said something along the line of "uh, thanks for the update." I feel like a total idiot now. If there was an acceptance, I probably just threw it away. But I didn't want to lie. Should I have?

And yeah, everybody says that about the song 🙂

Oh, and here's the rest of that email since people are interested. It may give you an idea about timeline.

Dear XXX,

It has been awhile since your visit to Penn and, as promised then, I wanted to give you an update on what is happening here in Philadelphia. Our interviews finished a few weeks ago. Although we are still several weeks away from sending out our initial round of acceptances at the end of March, we have reached a point where the end is starting to be in sight. Gary explained the acceptance process when you were here, but that was awhile ago, so let me remind you. As in past years we will send out a small number of initial acceptances in a few weeks and at the same time try to give everyone else an idea of where they stand - that last is especially important because every year we make a number of offers to people on the waitlist and I have no reason to believe that this year will be different. Our re-visit weekend (Penn Preview) is at the end of April.

At this point you have visited a number of programs and may have started to receive offers of admission. It is entirely up to you.

Finally, if this year continues to be like past years, chances are that things will get somewhat stressful for you (and all of the other MD-PhD program candidates across the country) as May 15th approaches. That is the date when AAMC traffic rules say that applicants to programs (and that includes Penn) that do not have a required start date earlier than July 1, have to narrow their acceptances down to one, but can still remain on waitlists. However things turn out, I wish you well through the next few months. The good news is that you shouldn’t have to do this more than once.

With sincere regards,

Skip Brass, MD PhD

If Penn isn't your first choice, then it doesn't matter nearly so much. I think at this stage in the game, Penn is trying to see who's still interested in the program. Many people have already gotten into their first choice school and really don't care about hearing from anywhere else but they haven't actually withdrawn...

just curious, would you mind sharing where your top choice is? Have you already gotten in?

My first choice is Cornell/Rockefeller/Sloan-Kettering. (I am in Cell and Cancer Biology, so SK is very attractive to me. And I love NYC). Yes, I have already gotten in. I haven't been in this forum for a while, so I haven't updated the threads. I should go put it into the acceptance thread.

The only reason I haven't withdrawn from everywhere is because my fiancee is applying to grad school at the same time, and his interview/decision-making process isn't finished.

congrats!!!! hopefully you'll get your choice and stay in NYC at the amazing Cornell Tri-I program

I second j-weezy. Cornell Tri-I is a fantastic place to get your MD/PhD, I whole-heartedly recommend it. 😀 😉

When will grad school decisions finally wind down? They go soooo late...well into April right?

Thank you so much guys! Sorry I have been out all day. Yeah, I am very excited about Tri-I. Though I really did love the other programs too.

Grad school decisions go until April 15. But I think as soon as his acceptance to Cornell is finalized, we would be set, since he really likes it there also.

My little birdie tells me that the MSTP has already made admissions decisions and now they're just awaiting the School of Medicine to finish selecting their applicants. So, nothing more to be done now. Just cross your fingers, relax. They have a pretty good track record of getting it right. 🙂

TMI

but seriously, thanks for the heads up!

(not that this will make waiting any easier)

I guess my letter of intent I sent in last week was a too late...

So much Penn love...Should I be bitter that I didn't even get an interview? 😕
