pushups and phone.

Yup.
I'm playing Pomodorium during a break, it's kind of rpg game based on pomoro technique. Gives med additional motivation 😀

I play guitar for 5 minutes or do pushups to wake me up. lol

Do you guys just generally "study" for the 25 minute blocks or do you actually set specific tasks to complete in them?

Hm, I don't really understand this answer. What are some examples?
Some activity where you force yourself to avoid all distractions, e.g. facebook, cell phone, TV playing in background, etc. for solid 25 mins. Then for 5 mins you engage all those things to give your attention span a break. Then repeat.

There is no special kind of task which goes into the 25 minutes. It can be studying, reading a book, etc. I used the technique for studying in med school, now I use it for my writing. Its just alloting a set period of time for intense 100% concentration for a set period of time then forcing yourself to take a break regardless of how you feel. Its supposed to give you more stamina for focus in the long-term.

Do you all just use a traditional timer to notify you when the time is up? Or are there apps to use?
There are plenty of Apps you can use. The one I use on my computer is Tomighty. I also have an actual tomato pomodoro I got a few years ago, but lost it.

I do an hour of studying followed by a 10 minute break rather than the traditional 25 and 5. I haven't tried the latter, but my first 10 or so minutes are usually sluggish in terms of efficiency so I feel that after 25 minutes I will have not accomplished much. Since an hour is pretty long, I pretty much always feel that I need a break when it is done, so I take it for 10 minutes, although a lot of times it ends up being longer than that. But sometimes I will not be finished with my hour and I notice my concentration slipping, in which case I take a break anyway because I'm not getting much done.
