You know how some medical schools and third-party sources have statistics that show you how many applicants to their school this year, and how many matriculants.

Well my question is, when they say "applicants" do they mean people who submitted their primaries, or those who submitted secondaries?

If it's the former, maybe these stats are misleading at first glance because some people get screened out automatically and a good number of people probably don't finish secondaries due to time and money constraints.

Just wondering.

It's very likely that it's the number of people who submit primaries that they're counting as the total. Yes, it is a little misleading. It's probably not worth worrying about any of it until you get an interview invite. Knowing there's a 20% or 50% chance of acceptance at that point is more helpful.
