I've read a post here, when applying out of state, saying to choose schools that had a certain percentage of out of state matriculants out of their total matriculants.

Wouldn't a better way to look at it involve dividing the number of out of state matriculants by the number of out of state applications. A school with few spots in their class but lots of out of state admits could be just the same as a school with more spots in their class but fewer percentage of out of state admits.

Just musing I guess...

better yet check the msar/med school websites to see if OOSers get in for special reaons (such as past ties to the state). this is much more useful than mathematical analysis

I second that. Raw stats on OOS don't tell you much - plus, since many applicants "shotgun" applications to lots of state schools, you won't find very many schools that don't get a ton of OOS applicants.

Some state schools strongly prefer past or current ties to the state for OOS applicants (my state does). If you're applying to Western schools that are part of the Western Interstate Compact, the OOS stats might be very deceptive (unless they report compact applicants as in-state - I have no idea). I'd look at the MSAR and pay close attention to school websites when applying - most school websites, either directly or in subtle phrases, will let you know pretty clearly how they feel about OOS applicants - I've seen a few schools who actually post suggested GPAs and MCATs needed to be competitive as an OOS applicant.
