Perceptions of NYU Students

Hey everyone!

Well, I am currently on the NYU wait-list, and would absolutely love to go there!! The one thing that I am not sure of is the students, which is a huge deal. I didn't get a chance to interact with the students much when I was there, so I am wondering if anyone has had some experiences, good and bad, with them or knows what the general attitude of the class usually is. This would really help me out a lot (if by chance they deem me worth of attending there 🙂 ). Thanks!

Work hard, play hard. Generally more toward the socializing drinking end in my estimation, but I've heard that they can also be an ultra hardworking bunch. May be people who took it a bit easier in college/did unconventional things and now have something to prove.

i actually had a pretty good chance to hang out with students while i was there b/c i stayed with a student host.

first of all, the whole dorm environment with it being attached to the school and all, gave me an eery feeling of being a freshman in college again. it is cool that it is connected to the school and all and students are all right next to each other, but as a somewhat older applicant (2 years out of college), i didn't like it too much. i think there is definitely more of a party atmosphere there (not to say that they don't study) but i think nyu students like to have fun. i would say that one word to charcterize them would be YOUNG. one of the students told me they thought that stood out about the school--that the oldest person they knew in their first year class was probably 27 or something.

other than that, being in a dorm makes it easy to find someone to answer questions, to study with, to procrastinate with.

they have high student activities fees which means a lot of their events are funded (one student told me about a trip to mexico or some exotic locale that was being funded).

as for students there... geez... i saw a lot of hot guys there (okay, maybe 2) but you probably don't care about that...

The people there seemed pretty relaxed and normal... like the type of people you can just chill with and be like... "Whatever, that's cool." They just seemed kinda like your normal cool people to hang with.

Thanks everyone, those were some of the impressions that I was starting to get. I am just out of college myself, so the age thing won't be a big deal to me. Also, I think I really do want to go somewhere where the students value having a good time, yes med school will be tough, , but I am determined to still have a good time for the next 4 years!

I would love more comments, the more, the better!

Does it really matter what religion the students are? I feel that comment was completey unnecessary. No statement, ever, like that would be helpful to someone assessing a school.

Of course it matters. Knowing something like that will be of great value to more people than you would think.

A good friend of mine was interviewed at a heavily Jewish NYC med school. The interviewer said "You're in. The Jews have to look out for the Jews, just like the Blacks look out for the Blacks." It's useful, in my opinion, to know that sentiments like this exist, and that some schools are heavily dominated by such religious groups.

I really doubt that an interviewer would have said anything like that...and even IF they did, which I find incredibly hard to believe, it's still only one person. Not representative. Your comments are so ridiculous that I'm not even going to bother to answer them further.

Baglady...I loved NYU when I visited...I'm waitlisted there too. Good luck to both of us! I had good impressions of NYU students, but didn't get to spend a lot of time with them either. Seems like they're a fun, laid-back group (at least for medical students) but they also seemed very bright.

I think you may be too sensitive. Nothing Dr. Lawyer said is offensive. I agree that knowing how many jews are at a school might be interesting to know.

i think the ethnic comment was interesting, but in the end it probably isn't going to really sway any of us as to where to go to medical school. do you really think that the folks who apply to einstein, georgetown or loma linda really give a hill of beans about the religious affiliations? i think not. with that being said though, i do find the ethnic demographics of nyu and other nyc medical schools to be interesting.

I think the vagueness of the term 'interesting' is at the root of what is confusing/angering readers of this thread. Perhaps if someone cared to better define what the term means for him/her, there would be less potential for hostility.

Do people find the fact that colleges like Spellmen (sp?) or Howard are predominately black 'interesting'? Do people find the demographics of a school like Johns Hopkins, with a large Asian, Indian, Jewish, etcetera, population 'interesting'? I think the flaw lies in the motives behind the use of such a word.

meh. my perception of nyu students are geeky and nerdioso. they really don't look like much party people, unless their idea of having fun is going out to the local science fair
