How common is this? Are there any D-1 medical schools that allow med students to play in the college marching band or other ensembles such as concert band or jazz band? I really would like to continue playing through medical school (that is, if i can get into one) and haven't been able to find too much information on the topic. Thanks.

I know at least at my undergrad you could. We always had graduate students in the choir and I know that the pep band sometimes even had professors. Now med students were rare (we only ever had one and he quit halfway through the year) but that isn't because they aren't allowed they just tend not to try out. I would expect most other universities to be similar but I don't really know for sure if that is true.

Edit: oh and my undergrad is division one by the way. (you asked about D1 schools)

i'm guess that as a med student you won't have the kind of time or flexibility necessary to practice, go to games, etc.

I was a singer with a med school music group during MS1 and MS2. We performed periodically but only practiced for an hour or two each week so it was not too time consuming. I enjoyed it.

was this, perchance, an a capella group?! i desperately want to continue a capella in med school and i'm hoping to find a school with a low-key group. either that or i'll start one myself. 🙂

Yes, my med school group is a capella. I sang for four years in college in a mixed group a capella and loved it. Delighted that I could continue to sing a capella in med school. A number of med schools have a capella groups. We sing at the hospitals for patients and for med school occasions when the parents show up. Great fun. Love to sing.
