  1. Pre-Dental
Hi,
I am a D3 now, just finished D2 and have a GPA of about 3.65. I wanted to get some insight of what kind of GPA I should be aiming to have to apply for perio residency in the future. I have done research and have tons of perio experience.
Thank you

Used to be that way, not so much anymore. Perio actually had the lowest percent of applicants match (126 graduated from US Dental Schools, 1 Canadian Dental School, and 10 International Dental Schools). Secret is out that Perio is one of the best specialties.

In 2021 Ortho 322/539 matched so 60%.
In 2021 Perio 137/304 matched so 45%.
In 2021 Prosth 118/232 matched so 51%.
In 2021 OS 235/473 matched so 50%.
In 2021 Peds 417/672 matched 62%.

Where do we look for endo?

I think perio is a great specialty with a good future. Everyone I know who has applied perio has got in. Many of them were from p/f unranked schools that showed an interest.

I think you have a great shot OP. To be sure, apply broadly. Consider externships at programs you're most interested in or shadowing at your school program.

EDIT: I don't know what to make of those numbers. If I take them at face value perio is the most competitive specialty, and OMS and prosth are nearly equivalent.

Endo is pass, not match. So they won’t be on that table. I picked a couple popular regional schools to compare # of apps and # of seats for all the specialties. Every program is different though. But I think these give a good idea of the competitiveness of each specialty. Columns are length of program, followed by applications, and then 1st year seats/ acceptances. This was 2019-2020. I think it goes OMS-Ortho-Endo- Pedo/ perio- prosth. But again it’s different for different schools and things are changing. Look how many Pedo apps Florida got!

I think anyone who has a desire to can match perio. I think you have a great shot OP. To be sure apply broadly. I don't think we can take them simply at face value, your right. The quality of OS applicant on average is probably higher than the quality of Perio or Prosth applicant on average. There is a lot of self selection going on, bottom 25% probably aren't applying to OS at the same rates that they are for Perio or Prosth, not to mention having to take the CBSE. Nonetheless, Perio is getting more and more competitive by the year.

Just aim to do the best you can at this point.

Research is a huge plus, see if you can get some sort of teaching experience as well.

That's like saying psychiatry (89.5% match rate) is more competitive than plastic surgery (91.7%) or radiology (96.3%), which we all know is far from the truth. There is definitely a selection bias. (Most) people don't apply to ortho with a ranking in the bottom 50%. Same holds true for OS in terms of CBSE; the majority of people would not apply with a sub 60 and/or atrocious rank. I can tell you first-hand that many of my classmates had intentions of applying to ortho, OS, and endo, but ended up not applying secondary to low scores/classrank/etc. This was not the case for my classmates who applied and matched into perio. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely some very good perio applicants, but lets not pretend like it's this ultra-competitive residency; rather there is a preconceived lower" minimal competitiveness" for it which likely leads to more unqualified applicants when compared to the other residencies.

Flashes23 said if best, the bottom 25% aren’t applying to OMFS. And if they are, they aren’t getting any interviews.

Bottom line is that match rate is a poor indicator of a specialty’s competitiveness. Perio is not absurdly competitive. You’ll be fine.

Yappy is correct, anyone who has an interest in Perio can likely match to Perio if they want.

In reality, there doesn’t need to be such a perceived competition between the specialties in terms of who is most competitive, best compensated, the coolest, the best at X, Y, or Z. All the specialties do very different things. An OMFS day is completely different from an Endodontist’s day, which is completely different from a pedodontist’s day, which in turn is light years different than an orthodontist’s day, none of which are remotely similar to the average general dentist’s day.
