Perio Residency

I graduated with a similar GPA, did a 1-year AEGD and applied and got in. I had no research experience in dental school, but was president of a few orgs, as well as community service and a lot of surgery CE

Edit: I didnt do my AEGD bc I knew I wanted to do perio, I thought I wanted to be a GP. BUT! I loved surgery so much that I applied last May and have been working in GP since. An AEGD is not required.

Appreciate your response. I have been working as a GP for 7 month now & as you mentioned I love the surgery aspect of dentistry much more. Now that being said, most of CE courses that I took are lecture base but Perio related. The surgery CE courses are a little bit pricy! Would you recommend taking them still?

How well were you doing as a GP versus someone that is a periodontist? Seems like traveling perio is the way to go.

No I'd just have them logged so you can show youre up-to-date and interested. I went to the ICOI last year and did Seattle Study Club. More than anything else you need to have these questions answered:

1) Why perio, and not for example OMS
2) What do you bring to the program and profession compared to others
3) Why this program

The money was good, I make above average. Practicing in a low competition area in Tx. The money wasnt the reason I am leaving GP, its that I dislike a lot of restorative and am very interested in the dentoalveolar surgery portion. Hopefully it was a wise move, ask me again in 5-10 years lol
