Hey there himal.

Most residencies are fairly difficult to get into, let alone having a BDS as opposed to a DDS/DMD. I would say that your chances are minimal (sorry for sounding pessimistic) in landing residencies with a foreign degree. I have to say that SOME programs do in fact have one or two spots dedicated to foreign grads, which might make it somewhat less difficult. Ok, i'm probably starting to confuse you now ... to sum up, it is a long shot ... but is possible.

Although you have chosen some of the relatively less competitive residency programs, you would still face some pretty stiff competition. UNLESS, you have excellent board scores, solid recommendations and experience to back it all ... yeah, it's tough.

Now in regards to the faculty path, that seems to be less competitive. I would say contact whatever school you are trying to land a teaching position at, and ask them what you need to do. My experience with teaching positions for foreign grad is that you will be required to take part I and II of the boards, TOEFL, followed by an application to the specific dept. of your choice. They should be able to issue you a "teaching permit" license, which would be limited to faculty practice. You should not need a DDS/DMD nor complete a residency program in order to be eligible for a teacher permit.

Please be aware that you will still not be able to do any private practice with a teachers permit, even at the level of Professor.

I hope I was able to answer most of your questions.

Good Luck.

Thank you for the post.
Anyways I am going to try once, if I am lucky enough may be I will get into it if not .........still its ok. 🙂

Hello Himal,
Do not underestimate the competition for the Perio residency. I have applied to numerous schools, attended few interviews and yet could not make it in. You should have great Part 1 score and good Part 2 score (>93 in both) and have solid recommendation letters, good GPA and class standing, clinical and research experience, etc and for course LUCK. If you are willing to give it a shot, go ahead and apply. The competition for residency programs have greatly increased in the past few years.
GOOD LUCK

Hi shreshta,

I think anu is referring about Harvard U, Tuft's and BU...all three situated in Boston and have Perio program. I also heard that it is easier to get into Indianapolis program (http://www.iusd.iupui.edu/). Also Perio program in Minnesota (http://www.dentistry.umn.edu/) has accepted Indian graduates in the past. Try UIC as well.

If you don't mind my advice is write to PDs of each program (with a copy of your current resume) and show your genuine interest in Perio as a career choice. It worked for one of my friend.

Good luck,
rahmed

So if one does get into a perio program...they complete 3 years and are eligible to teach only in the field of Periodontics as what a profeesor???? They can't practice at all?

To my best knowledge no.But practice-laws are governed by state dental boards so they are the best people to ask.For eg- if you want to practice in New York, call the NY state dental board and ask for their rules and regulations.Alternately you can visit their web site.

Also ,I dont think one can become a professor right off the bat. When appointed, one is an instructor, then assistant professor, then associate professor then a full professor. One has to have teaching, community service and research under the belt over a period of time.
"publish or perish" is commonly told in academe. But I understand form those who do this ,it is very very rewarding.
But don't look at the hurdles if that is what you are interested in.Just "do it".
🙂

One more question. Which is an easy program to get into? Endo , perio or ortho? I am interested in clinical programs. If you do masters in US and go back to India will this master's be valid there?

I have heard a lot of conflicting information. Some say it is, some say not to the same level as MDS.Maybe you can look up the statues of DCI?

Thank you. I thought that PASS applications start in mid may, I spoke to this lady in University of minnesota n was told that the class for 2007 was already full through PASS. How is it possible?

Upenn and U of minnesota also call their advanced standing program as PASS.
most of the schools require you to participate in the PASS and some require you to get the MATCH number, while some other universities accept applications directly for international students.
correct me if i'm wrong.

Thank you for the link. But some of the schools mentioned there have already been closed and the website hasnt been updated. So I wrote to the DCI prsident for info. He wrote back saying that anyone who has a Indian Passport can get their MS equalised to MDS and be a specialist and it is recognised by DCI.
