So I need some info on periodontics. What GPA is considered competitive for this field, I know extracurricular activities always help in that respect.
Where can I get good concise info about stuff that you need to have/do to be competitive for this field? I'm thinking something in lines of ADEA guide to dental schools but in this case, guide to dental specialties.

Thanks

Top half of your class and boards above 85. Or english as a first language.

I also agree with this statement. Perio is generally not very competitive. Instead of studying for boards, get a job and start saving up for 50k/year tuition.

Thank you for your responses. Boards is pass/fail for us. So they will put more emphasis on class ranking I assume. You guys think Perio isn't that competitive? Do you know approx. how many applicants to spots we are talking on average?

The competitiveness really depends on the program. The more desirable the program is (lower cost, less residents, large patient pool, nicer facilities, important research, big name directors/professors), the more competitive it is. So your statistics will be looked at more at certain programs than others, but there are programs out there that definitely do not have that many applicants for the amount of spots they have open.

All jokes aside, what's required to get into a perio residency? even a less desirable one? Research, what class rank, how high board scores? Anything else??

Please save the comedic responses, I am genuinely interested and would appreciate a genuine response. I'm finding I can't be committed enough to put in the hours to stay top of 1/3 of the class; are top marks really not that necessary?

Everything that has been said is serious. Top half of class and 85 or above on boards to be competitive. People with lower stats do get in if they are sharp/have a good personality.
