Salam. My dad's been pushing me to go into dentistry although I personally want to go for MD. He wants me to take the DAT with the MCAT this summer. Can you guys share what made you go into dentistry? Thanks!
hey gavanshir,
so my father's a dentist and i'm currently a medical student with a couple of clinical rotations under my belt so maybe i can give you a little perspective of both:
first off dentistry's pretty good(good earnings, 8-5 job, a respectable field), for one thing you'd be finished with the d.d.s. much earlier that with the md, i think simply put dentistry's more of a career while medicine's more of a way of life
so as you probably already know, the md requires 4years of medschool and then residency, the far majority of ppl from my class goto a 3-5year residencies and subsequently complete a fellowship which takes another 2-3 years, very few ppl in this day and age become a generalist, and your life would be alot better if you subspecialize so you basically have to complete those additional years
medschool depending on where you goto is not so bad, basic sciences go by pretty quickly (2 years for most places, and some places even less), clincal rotations are another 2years and even they aren't really THAT bad, i think the most i've done so far have been 70hr weeks (not including the studying)
anyways the bad thing of course is that then you have residency and lifes alot more hellish (esp. if you go into surgical fields), the first 2years of residency you'll spend atleast 80hrs a week in the hospital (and most surgical fields have extensions on that law so they can keep you there 88hrs a week)
anyways the worst part about all of this is the time it takes to finish so for example the average cardiologist takes:
4 undergrad, 4 medschool, 3 internal medicine, 4 cardiology fellowship
but on the good side, you feel as though your touching ppls lives on a daily basis,
