i'm not persian... i'm a neighbor in the region.. pakistani.. lol

just curious.. btw, no offense.. purely curious... you're a persian named Susan Greenberg?

The OP's real name is probably not Suzie Greenberg. I suppose she is not only a Persian pre-dent but also a Phish fan. In case people don't know, Suzie Greenberg is a Phish song. You'll find a lot of closet Phish fans in dental school. I count myself as one of them.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I couldn't resist responding when the thread was started by SusyGrnbrg.

Count Me..Persian Probably Going to USC Fall 2006

I'll be at IUSD along with 3-4 more Persians. I think Persians are the 2nd largest minority in dental school (after Indians).

Ditto. and the funny thing is that often times we want to blend in and only think that we are doing a good job at it. I can spot a Persian from a mile away just by looking at his/her nose!!

at my UofT interview, our intervie group had 8 people, 5 of us were persian. And our 2 tour guides were both persian as well. They told us that every year, atleat 10% of the class is persian...not too shabby!

yeaa i think for persians its not just money its a combination of prestige/financial comfort...i think if we all devote the amount of time we will to dentistry to a business we could have 6 figure salaries...

I personally want to go into dentistry because I like the flexibility. I don't want to bust my ass and stress myself out over my job. Basically just want to have fun and do the things that I want in my life and not be tied down with my career. 😀

I personally decided on dentistry when I was a teen b/c I liked it . I was in Iran back then too and did not know anything about dentistry in the US OR the fact that I might one day move here. Needless to say, migrating to the US and seeing how dentistry is has only made the desire stronger.

Salam. My dad's been pushing me to go into dentistry although I personally want to go for MD. He wants me to take the DAT with the MCAT this summer. Can you guys share what made you go into dentistry? Thanks!

Hi there..

Dont let anyone decide the profession you should get into. Unlike your parents, my parents wanted me to become an MD (surprised?) and it took me 4 years of discussion to make them understand that my passion rests in dentistry. I also applied to pharmacy as a back up this year and when i got in, they started pursuing me to pick pharm over dent. I assume you have researched the MD by now, do the same for dent; shadow a dentist, read up a lot... do your research bottom line and see if it is something you like. Dentistry, is not for everyone the same way that teaching, MD, pharm, cooking, law, business, CEO. etc are not for everyone. Explain to them that you respect their suggestion and ask then politely to respect your decision for this is what makes you happy/satisfied in life. best of luck.

Probably your dad think that Dentistry pays off very fast but the reality is that you are not going to be live like a real dentist until 3-4 yrs after your graduation and after being an associate for less thank 100K a year. I have taken MCAT myself and it is very hard..Personally I prefer dentistry since the stress is less than medicine, more control of my time, better lifestyle..You focus only on one area and see instant results..You can develop a continuing relationship with your patients and the field is not monotonous... 😍

If you like MD more go for MD.

I have been into MD for about 2-3 years now but had never seriously considered or read into dentistry until this summer. I have two twin auntes in eastern US who are very successful dentists and run their own offices and would be able to provide me with whatever I would need; so I suppose that I would be on my feet sooner than later. I guess I still have to read into it more and ask more questions.

Who will be in BU class of 2010...

my bf joe is egytian (going to go to usc dent), and he always makes fun of the fact that i refer to myself as "persian." he says, hey, lets book a flight to Persia! Then he goes on expedia and types in "persia" and says, "wait a minute, it DOESNT EXIST!!"

lol.

nevermind, I'm "iranian."

gmohomma whenever he says that just say tell me where the country latino or latina is?

gavanshir i think what you should do is attend a progam that some schools have that is an introductory to dentistry, UMDNJ has one and it is free, i worked in a dentists office for a long time but i still was unsure, u never know up until u get the chance to work on teeth and drilll so id recommend doing one of those programs, i did one and i LOVED IT...if you want more info about programs like that send me a message

It seems like you already know where your heart lies. Now, you have to make your dad understand your situation. My mom has always been telling me to go to medical school!! Since I was in first year of undergrad she's been pushing me into it. I decide to apply to dental school a month after graduation after I shadowed couple of dentists and an MD. My mom wasnt happy with my decision but what can I do!! Even before December first my mom would telling me if I didnt get in dental school this year I should apply to medical school the year after. Well.. she's mostly happy now with my decision. I guess as long as she can call me Doctor she'll be happy!! So typical of persian (OOPS!! Iranian 😉 ) parents!

hey gavanshir,

so my father's a dentist and i'm currently a medical student with a couple of clinical rotations under my belt so maybe i can give you a little perspective of both:

first off dentistry's pretty good(good earnings, 8-5 job, a respectable field), for one thing you'd be finished with the d.d.s. much earlier that with the md, i think simply put dentistry's more of a career while medicine's more of a way of life

so as you probably already know, the md requires 4years of medschool and then residency, the far majority of ppl from my class goto a 3-5year residencies and subsequently complete a fellowship which takes another 2-3 years, very few ppl in this day and age become a generalist, and your life would be alot better if you subspecialize so you basically have to complete those additional years

medschool depending on where you goto is not so bad, basic sciences go by pretty quickly (2 years for most places, and some places even less), clincal rotations are another 2years and even they aren't really THAT bad, i think the most i've done so far have been 70hr weeks (not including the studying)

anyways the bad thing of course is that then you have residency and lifes alot more hellish (esp. if you go into surgical fields), the first 2years of residency you'll spend atleast 80hrs a week in the hospital (and most surgical fields have extensions on that law so they can keep you there 88hrs a week)
anyways the worst part about all of this is the time it takes to finish so for example the average cardiologist takes:
4 undergrad, 4 medschool, 3 internal medicine, 4 cardiology fellowship

but on the good side, you feel as though your touching ppls lives on a daily basis,

this is the best profession in the world! It has everything I need.

Thanks for the posts and thank you MED_04.
