Hey,

I had a question for the doctors out there. Does being persistent help in this profession aside from the studying and the work you have to do? Like, when you're a doctor, does being persistent help in anyway? I was thinking that it could help if you wanted to save someone's life and you were willing to perform an additional surgery or give another drug to a patient to save the person's life..but it seems like this would happen with everyone whether or not they were persistent. Is there anything else that this trait helps with as a doctor?

Thanks, been wondering about this one and can't seem to find an answer.

Please don't cross-post - you also created an identical thread in the Pre-Allo forum.

Your question is a little odd - why the fixation on the word/term "persistent"? Yes it helps to be persistent - along with compassionate, patient, sympathetic, knowledgable, hard-working, diligent, enthusiastic, etc.

Performing "additional surgery" or giving "another drug" to a patient is something that is done if it's medically indicated - not if the physician in question is feeling "persistent." You do what's best for the patient, and ideally, this should be independent of your own strengths and weaknesses.

Just out of curiosity, why are you asking this question? Any particular reason?

I think that my greatest strength has always been persistence, and I look at it as the one thing that sets me apart from other people. I was wondering if there was anything in particular that I could apply it to as a doctor. For example, as a basketball player being persistent would put you in the gym more often than others, and your skill would develop as a result of that. As a firefighter, being persistent would make you more bold and attempt to save people that other firefighters gave up on. So I was wondering if this persistence could apply to the medical field. Do you guys know what I mean?

Persistence is kind of the point to it all, dontchathink?

Are you trying to answer an essay question for class or something???

It must be secondary season and some applicants don't know how to write creative responses.

What you mention is motivation.
You cannot be a good firefighter if you don't have a good motivation. Sure you can be persistent, but what makes you good at what you do is why you do it plus many other factors.

We aren't doctors (yet) 🙂

Persistence is a great trait to have as a doctor. For example, when trying to figure out a strange diagnosis, or working with other people. It's always a good idea to stay on target and work towards a goal, and this is important in any field, medicine included.

Persistance is good but I would be wary of a stubborn doctor. A stubborn doctor could keep trying to help a patient at the expense of the patient's independence and could believe that he/she has made a correct diagnosis even if there is evidence to show that he/she was wrong.

That was my hunch.

To the OP, "persistence" may not be quite the word you're looking for. Hard-working, or diligent, or dedicated, or self-motivated, maybe.

Maybe cross-posting is an example of his persistence. Before long, he will have asked the neurologists, podiatrists, pre-pharm, Africa and Middle East, Site Support and Suggestions, and Spouses and Partners.

Don't forget the pediatricians they are very persistent
