the average joe is pretty pathetic.

This is why I love dealing with patients without insurance, they seem to care more about their health than most.

The best patients are the ones that are shocked when their copayments are $3.00 and they refuse to get the medicine because its, oh no!, 3 fricken dollars.

And then they tell you to ring up candy and chips that came out to be $5.00

This.

Back in my retail days, a woman came in to pick up some promethazine with codeine for her kid. The copay was a dollar. She didn't want to pay it because "The state is supposed to pay for that!" She had a 12 pack of beer in her hand. The pharmacist (old guy) said, "Well if you put down that 12 pack, you can buy your kids medicine." The lady flipped and left.

Poor kid.

maybe recommending a 6-pack would have been a better idea.

i am all for helping people but seriously we need to stop fighting Natural Selection and let these bad genes be naturally selected out of society.

Too late for that. Thank technology. Totally joking...

The truth is, issues like these are much more complex. I try to have compassion for people who are in a terrible situation and who only make it worse because they don't know any better. It is hard to do, though. Not sure how we can fix it :-/

actually, i'd say the people who are subject to genetic natural selection (cancer patients for example) are the ones who deserve to helped. it's the obese who suffer from metabolic syndrome who can't stop stuffing their faces that I have hard time feeling sorry for.

note: i understand that there are hereditary issues with diabetes and obesity, etc but I would argue these are caused by epigenetic imprinting... there is no proof for this but it's just a hunch.

most cancers are caused by environmental exposure not genetically based (although many are or put you at increased risk).

it is the constant babying everyone in society is just so sickening. nobody thinks anymore. being an intellectual is almost unheard of these days. everyone just wants to sit around and do nothing and be baby fed everything. nobody wants to get up and work and re-invent themselves.

ah america.......

Don't blame our society, blame our judicial system. You guys complain about limits on fast food, cigarettes, soda pop, or whatever but the big picture is that lawsuits were brought up against these companies and they seem to be working. If you don't want to bring up a lawsuit that's your business.

I'm not condoning the babying of our society but it's not because America is becoming a baby nation, our parents are treating us like babies.

With the exception of some major birth defects, humanity can get around a lot of that using technology and medication. What other species would it be acceptable to have such a large percentage requiring glasses/contacts/surgery in order to see clearly? Any other animal that couldn't see wouldn't survive. What about young who can't breathe? We give them inhalers and they grow up fine (and have kids who also have asthma). Other species not so much.

We're probably the only species who knows what evolution and natural section are, but we really don't follow them.
