Personal Statement for Prelim or Transitional Year?

Does anyone know if we should use our categorical personal statement when applying for preliminary year or transitional year programs?

Some of my letter writers graciously offered to write different versions of their letters - one general and one for the specialty. It's not that hard for them to do - change a word, add a sentence - especially in the time of word processors, but it's nice when they offer. Perhaps you can get one or two of your letter writers to do the same?
