I wasn't sure how much I should bring up the topic of my mothers death in my personal statement. It without a doubt was the most important reason of why I want to be a physician. I just don't want my statement to sound like a sob story. She was sick from when I was about 9 years old until I was 17, so it played substantial part in my life.

Definitely include it. If it's played such a substantial role in your life, there's no reason why you shouldn't. It will surely capture the attention of adcom's and they won't see it as a sob story. They want to see what drives you to becoming a physician.

Something that tends to work well is to open with a small narrative like passage about a moment you remember about your mom being sick and transitioning into a summary of the full story and how it motivates you.

Can you handle talking about it during interviews? Or will it be too emotional/traumatic to bring it up every time you interview?

I'm sorry about your mom🙁
