I've just decided to apply to a few DO schools and was wondering if anyone could give me any tips on writing the personal statement...do you generally not want to use your amcas personal statement? and address why you want to go to osteopathic medical school as opposed to allopathic in the statement? or can you just talk about why you want to be a doctor in general?

any help would be greatly appreciated!! thanks!

If I remember correctly the AACOMAS essay is shorter than the AMCAS one, so you can't cut and paste. But yes, you should address the basics - why doctor AND why DO. Try to make it unique, not just the typical "DOs are more holistic blah blah blah". Good luck :luck:
PS - including clinical experiences are helpful if you have them

applying to matriculate Fall 2006?

Use the AMCAS as a draft if possible. Make it a why you became interested in medicine essay. Save why osteopathic or why doctor for secondaries since most schools will ask this.

I wrote a general essay for AMCAS and cut out a paragraph of it (agonizingly) for my AACOMAS. It included my passions for medicine and experiences leading me down this road. I left the "why DO" and all that for my secondary applications. You will find that many of the secondary applications ask directly "Why DO?" anyway. Are you applying for next year? I know the deadline for UMDNJ passed yesterday but I am not sure about other schools.

Thanks for the tips! Yeah I am applying for Fall 2006....I know its pretty late. I am a California resident and am only planning on applying to Western and Touro whose deadlines I haven't missed yet so I guess we'll see what happens!
