Personal Statement Question

Is it ok to use the shorthand "OD" in your personal statement? And if so, when I am referring to plural it's "ODs" right?
I'm assuming you don't want to take up too much character count with optometrist(s)? I'm sure it's fine to use "O.D." but I personally would not have done that. I used 'optometrist' in general and when referring to my doctor just Dr. Blah, O.D.

Yes, I want to use it because of character count! I only used it in the paragraph where I talk about my shadowing experiences, I used "optometrist" in the rest of the personal statement. So in the shadowing paragraph I first wrote "Doctor of Optometry (OD)" and then used "OD" in the rest of the paragraph. Sometimes I had to refer to plural optometrists so I used "ODs" in that case. The reason I used "OD" and not "O.D." is because I found the AOA Style Guide that is used for written communications, advertising etc. and it said to use the periods when it follows a name and no periods when using it as a noun.
