I shadowed two military physicians who were osteopathic phyisicians. What is the best way to make it clear that they're DOs in my AACOMAS PS? Because they both went to schools I'm applying to, I did it like:

"I arranged to shadow my squadron’s flight surgeon, Dr. Fake Name, a graduate of OSU-COM."

Does that work? Do schools accept the abbreviations I'm familiar with (OSU-COM and AZCOM)?

without a doubt they recognize it...however, i think it more professional if you write it out the first time. furthermore, why not put D.O. after the name? 😀

I don't have nearly enough characters for that. They only give you 3000 (and it wouldn't even take all 3000). What, do they want me to say, "Hi, my name is [oops out of characters]"?

You could always just remove the "a graduate from..." and replace it with D.O. Are you using those doctors for your LORs? If so, I'm sure they'll mention what school they graduated from. 😉

hey moose...i know it is a pain in the a$$. especially when it is 3000 or less in WORD and then it doesn't quite transfer over. try to manipulate it here or there when all finished to either get the name of school or DO in there. i ran into the same problem with my essays as well. there are creative ways to massage more characters out and free up some room to get those other important points in. i know you're not dumb, and probably read over the essay hundreds of times to find something to cut. there has to be one sentence somewhere you can delete.

sorry i can't actually help you 🙁

It's all good. I used all sorts of little tactics  First I took out all the double spaces after periods, although my typing teacher was yelling at me from my skull! Then I edited extraneous words. Then I deleted entire sentences that might be slight redundant. Man, 3000 words is anemic compared to 5K!

you know...i always use to put 2 spaces as well...but then i picked apart the APA book and came to the conclusion that they state one space only! am i wrong?? i might be able to find a reference page in the APA book

if it weren't two spaces why would MS Word make the green squiggly line?

seriously...i will try to find the citation in APA book later tonight after work. i thought the same thing for years as well...then switched over to 1. i might be a total idiot and be wrong 😀 . i remember being all anal about my thesis and looked up a lot of rules...but stay posted, i will see if i can find it later. 🙂

think 2 spaces is old school because that is what I remember being told in the 80's but I only do 1 space now.

Thank you!! I just never got around to looking it up. I can almost bet I could reference it in my APA book.

On a computer, you only use one space after a period. I think it has to do with the formatting.
Hard dose to swallow for those of us who learned typing from an anally retentive golf coach on a typewriter.
